The Wandering Camel's Caravan

by TheWanderingCamel - last update: Nov 22, 2008

Ahlan Wa Sahlan! Welcome!

Somewhere,
out beyond all ideas of right and wrong-doing
there is a field -
I'll meet you there.

Wise words from Rumi - ones that we all should carry in our hearts and minds as we travel. Wonderful as the sights and sounds and smells we encounter on our journeys are, it's the people we meet along the way that really matter.

Welcome to The House of TheWanderingCamel
Fellow travellers are always welcome here.
Join us for a while,
Listen to our tales,
Tell us of your own adventures
The Caravanserai is open.

(Can you work out where the people pictured here are from? They're all to be found somewhere on our travel pages)

Croatia Redux

Updates and additions

It's always great to revisit places you love, whether in reality or virtually. Going back almost always brings new discoveries and experiences to add to old pages, and then there are the pages we begin and get sidetracked from before we finish them - who hasn't got a tip that says "Under construction" or "Coming Soon"?

Recent additions and updates here include a tip for London's fantastic Wetland Centre (that's only taken a year to finish!), Croatia, New Zealand and Santiago.

Completely new are pages on Rome and Sicily - the fruits of a marvellous trip to Italy in June this year.

Sarajevo's the very latest, a few days there in October was enough to fall in love with this city at the crossroads of East and West.

Which one is Lulu?

So, just who are The Wandering Camels?

We're a group of online friends with a shared love of travel - especially in the Middle East.

We thought it would be fun to share this page and our adventures. Some of the pages you'll find here are the work of just one of us - others such as Mexico and Paris are joint efforts.

Check out our individual profiles below and, please, feel free to drop a note to all or any one of us, one of us will get back to you
or, if you prefer, address your message to an individual by name

Leyle the FootlooseEmu

Leyle

Syria is what brought me to TheWanderingCamel's caravanserai in the first place, but there are so many fantastic places that I've visited - and would love to return to one day.

2007 was another great year of travelling and what better start to the year could there have been than a trip to England to see my daughter who has been living in London for several years, and a return toLibya.

Revisiting favourite places continued through the year - in August it was England and Croatia, including a first visit to the beautiful island of Hvar and to fulfil a wish to return to Mostar, and then San Antonio and Oaxaca in September and October. The changes I found and the new things I discovered are slowly being added to pages I've already written.

It wasn't all overseas travel though. There's so much of my homeland still to explore and a late Autumn trip to Victoria found me visiting the historic small town of Port Albert on the Gippsland coast.

2008's shaping up to be another busy year, starting off with England and Lisbon in February and New Zealand at Easter. England and Italy follow in June and July, then it's back to Europe in September.

Meet Megypt

=
Hi everyone,

I am Megypt, and my area of interest is the exotic Middle East. The very crossroads of civilization, this region is a never ending supply of history and culture.

Megypt's tips on Egypt and Cairo include lots of really practical hints from someone who has lived there - check them out.

NEW! Give us a shout in our new SHOUT BOX (click here)

No registration is required, just type away. Someone is usually around, but we are new at this so be patient :D

This shoutbox is connected to a fun, offsite travel forum made by one of the Wandering Camel. It is not affiliated with any company or anything like that....it is made up of fellow wanderers who swap stories and have long experience in giving travel advice.
If you want to get to the forum itself, then just click HERE.

She tries to blend in

Next is Lulu

Lulu's rather shy (this is a note from Leyle)- but she does know Jordan
very well indeed. The wonders of Petra, Wadi Rum's stark beauty, the ins and outs of Jordan's capital, Amman, are just some of the places you'll find on her pages, and her knowledge of them is that of a true insider.

Cornwall and Paris are also places she knows well and you'll find she has lots of local knowledge to impart.

New Zealand noshery

Home from the desert

There's always something new happening at The House of The Wandering Camel. Pages are constantly being added to or updated as one or other of us settles in for a while with tales to tell of new travels or new aspects of old favourites.

Easter 2008 was a chance for leyle to revisit old haunts such as Wanaka and Christchurch on her regular biennial trip to New Zealand. There are updates on those pages as well as a new page on New Zealand's third island - beautiful Stewart Island in the far south.

A winter break in Lisbon - a first - has seen another place, and page added. What a delight that proved to be. Putting a page together brought back lots of good memories, not the least meeting fellow-VTers, a2lopes and globetrott.

Plans for an autumn visit to Croatia brought on the urge to update that page and create new ones about Split and the gorgeous island of Brac - places on the agenda for this year - so no doubt there'll be even more to add come November.

And revisiting Roman Split brought back memories of a visit just last year to the marvellous antiquities museum at the Getty Villa in Malibu just outside Los Angeles.

What a unique HP with those camels --- Only one time I rode a camel and it wasn't uncomfortable at all.. I wonder why they named a cigarette after a camel?

Thank you for dropping by Narita, Leyle. We're currently with friends at Caloundra and this week in Brisbane. VT time greatly limited as a result, but I'll be in touch soon.
