Oahu - The Gathering Place

by 2rs - last update: May 2, 2004

The south east coast of Oahu
My knowledge about Oahu and experiences is limited since I only stayed on the island for three days.

The guidebooks says that Hawaii receives about 6 - 7 million visitors each year, and that about half of them visits Oahu. These visitors in addition to the about 900 000 residents sure makes this the most crowded of the Hawaiian islands.

Once youre out of Honolulu and the tourist boiling pot of Waikiki there's plenty of space, unhabitated landscapes and nice small townships.

If you're staying in Waikiki where most of the visitors end up, do yourself the faour and see some of the rest of the island. A trip up to the North Shore is well recomended and getting there and around the island is quite easy with "The Bus".

The North Shore

The North shore is known as a surfers paradise during the winter season due to its good surfing conditions.

There's also many nice beaches in the area, and if you're lucky and the surf is good you can watch the surfers while enjoying the sun in the sand.
One Waterfront Towers, Makai and Mauka

Honolulu skyscrapers

Honolulu is well known for being the skyscraper city of polynesia.
The tallest buildings are First Hawaiian Center at 133,5 meters and Nauru Tower at 127,4 meters.
I did not have the time to see them all close up, which perhaps is a good reason to one day return, but I got a nice picture of the One Waterfront Towers, two of the five 122 meter buldings in Honolulu.
