Iraq is a very beautiful and interesting country. The problem is the political situation. Saddam Hussein is a dictator and Iraqi people have suffered a lot in the last two decades. Unfortunately the international community is too much afraid of the vacuum or the possibility that Iran would conquer the Iraqi territory. In their opinion it's less worse to go on with Saddam Hussein than with an unknown future. Iraqi people are some of most friendly I ever met on my trips around the world. I'd allways had my doubts about their reaction. How would they accept me? It was no problem, absolutely no problem!
While walking along a street people suddenly said "thank you" to me. When that happened several times I once asked why they would say "thank you" to me: the answer was "because you are visiting our country".
I really hope that UN will stop sanctions. If they want to punish Saddam Hussein and his system this won't help, not at all. The people are suffering, no one else but the people. Sanctions are the worst solution to force a system like that one of Saddam Hussein, especially after a period of 10 years. Of course, they had been frightened to get rid of Saddam Hussein because no one knows what could come then. Would Iran conquer a part of Iraq? How would an independent Kurdish state be in his relations to Western countries? Would that mean a destabilisation for the whole region? I must admit that probably nobody has a 100% answer for that. But the status quo is much worse than any other solution - to the Iraqi people! Not to the Western countries and, of course, not to Saddam Hussein.
