| Page Views: 1,260 Last Visit to Suriname: - I Used To Live Here | Sarong kebaja by ATLC - last update: Aug 31, 2002 |
20 years ago... Here's a 20 yr old picture of me in a sarong kebaja. I feel quite at home in the traditional Javanese sarong kebaja. The sarong is a rectangled batik piece of cloth (cotton) which is wound tightly round the waist so that it is not only tight around the hips but also around the feet. Only small steps possible! The kebaja is a blouse, sometimes the same fabric as the batik sarong, sometimes made of lacey material or silk. It's always tight in the waist and the whole effect is very feminine. For daily use, its usually any old sarong and a tshirt. The men just wear a sarong. |
And errr. ..many years later... Javanese people are not tall. But with my Dutch upbringing I grew to be significantly taller than average (I'm 1.68 m), so most sarongs are a little too short for me. For the rest a sarong is ideal because they always fit! Quite useful when the plump years start... hehe. |

apekovic Sat Feb 2, 2008 09:46 UTC Fantastic story of Suriname and your life! | Cruiseone2003 Fri Dec 14, 2007 00:53 UTC As a child (late 60's, early 70's) we'd go to my grandparents house in Northern New Mexico, they had an outhouse too, I can't say they were fond memories but it sure made life interesting! | TheWanderingCamel Fri Oct 12, 2007 02:44 UTC Must make it to the northern reaches of South America - as spicy a mix of cultures as of the food, just the sort of place I love to travel to. Nice looking back with you. leyle | jivanne96 Tue Sep 25, 2007 18:22 UTC Nice knowing your roots! |
