Digging the dirt: how to have an archaeological holiday in the UKby
leicsAre you fascinated by how ordinary folk lived their ordinary lives hundreds (or thousands) of years ago? Would you get a thrill from being the first human to see and touch something after more than 1000 years? How about finding a prehistoric flint arrowhead…..or an Anglo-Saxon cloak pin….or a Roman earring…or even a human skeleton?
Have you always wanted to be an archaeologist but, somehow, your real life has got in the way? Well, you can still fulfil that dream…..and this article will tell you how.
Archeological excavation destroys evidence forever, so there is far less opportunity in the UK than there used to be (research and rescue sites only). But there are several annual UK digs which happily accept volunteers, give them proper training and let them take a real part in real excavations.
You'll work a standard day (maybe 8.30 to 5, with meal breaks) alongside a group of other enthusiasts. Their ages can range from 16 to 70, and they can come from anywhere (I have dug with volunteers from the US, Canada, France, Germany, Belgium and even Australia). There are usually some organised evening activities and, of course, lots of opportunities to visit the local pubs (UK archaeologists are fond of their beer!).
