Perth’s Skyscrapers, a Flower Pot and a Moment of Magic

by Kathrin_E

A chilly autumn afternoon in a small-town train station somewhere in Germany. I am waiting for my train home, which is once more delayed. I am bored. To pass time I check out the placards on the platforms. Actually I dislike advertising but there is nothing else to do or think about. The huge advertisement of a bank catches my eye. I see the photo of a woman watering a flower pot with a watering-can, but instead of plants there are three skyscrapers growing from the pot. Who invents such a silly picture?

Wait a moment, the skyscrapers look oddly familiar. The designer must have taken into consideration how popular a travel destination Australia is among Germans: These buildings in the photo are, no doubt, three towers from the skyline of Perth, Western Australia.

The grey drizzle vanishes. I recall Perth’s clear blue sky and bright sunlight. Was that a rainbow lorikeet under the platform roof, or just a wet dirty pigeon? Shame there is no one around who might share my excitement.

Liebfrauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) is a Roman Catholic Parish Church and Minster located in the heart of Frankfurt. It dates back to the 14th century, when it was just a tiny church. In the 15th century it was enlarged and the belfry added. The interior is simple, with lovely brick-lined arches. The church was badly damaged during World War II, and these days looks newly renovated after being rebuilt in 1954 - only figures on the altar... [read more]
