leicsThe UK is full of prehistory. Stonehenge may be the most famous site but it's only one of thousands more dotted about the countryside.
But the thing about prehistoric archaeology is that, unless you are an expert or an addict, one earthen mound or heap of stones can look very much like another. So here are a few suggestions for places where the past is presented in a way anyone can understand and where you can really experience what life was like thousands of years ago.
Orkney.
The magic of beautiful Orkney will weave its spell on you from the moment you arrive. Its land and seascapes are wonderful, but the islands also house a wealth of prehistory. Most famous, perhaps, is
Skara Brae, a 5-thousand-year-old Neolithic village exposed by a fierce storm in 1850. The houses snuggle low into the ground, joined together by tunnels to provide shelter from the wild Orkney weather, and every house has the same layout: a 'dresser' facing the entrance, central fireplace, beds on either side, shelves in the walls for personal items and lamps. It is intriguing to see how ordinary folk lived. The site exhibition has excellent displays and includes a fascinating video.
