Safaris - Bundu-bashing time!by
JenniflowerMy husband and I are born bush babies. We get into the bush (go on safari) as often as we can. Even though we live in England currently, we have to indulge in our annual fix (preferably to the
Kruger National Park) - the sunshine and Vitamin D, the dry taste of the dusty earth, the whisper of the pale savannah grass. All you could possibly want... and
more!
So, once a year, we go through the same ritual of
packing: we diligently consume our gross tasting malaria tablets, and pack our non-too-sweet smelling, mosquito repelling Tabard; high factor, water-resistant sunblock; light, sun reflective clothing, and a decent hat/cap. In goes a hand-held battery operated fan and a mini torch too.
An absolute necessity,
malaria tablets need to be taken, and taken correctly - before, during and after your bush visit. Timing is important, so read the instructions, and be aware of some of the possible side effects, which aren't particularly pleasant. They often necessitate a doctor's visit for a prescription. Ask your pharmacist what you need to do, and ask in good time, as more often than not a pharmacy outside of Africa won't have Malarone (an example of one kind of anti malarial drug) in stock.
