Choose well the season you go there

by Svillegas

First of all you should now that Sahara in summer suffers incredible hight temperatures. I went in September and at midday it was around 50 ºC, I was not used to it and it was not easy to pass, and I found it very heavy. On the other hand you can take a profit of this hot time having a snap, resting in a shade and seeing the "mula-mulas. It is a bird that touaregs tell that brings good news, they are very confident and come very near people, if you leave them some water in a glass they will drink easily.

My greatest memory was being entertained by the people of Djelfa, who gave a performance of traditional dances, and treated us to a typical feast, roasted lamb on the spit. I enjoyed meeting the people, they were curious and gracious, and appreciative of our gifts, and proud of their heritage.

Visit the Sahara Desert. The size and grandeur of the Sahara is absolutely mindnumbing. I hitched down into the desert and got dropped off in the middle of nowhere at a turnoff to nowhere and all I could see was a thin ribbon of highway stretching north and south into the desert. I got a lift with the next car that came by 15 minutes later, but the isolation that I felt while standing there was rather awesome. I spent 4 days with a family in Bejaia on the north coast and they were extremely hospitable and treated me like a king. The picture above is of the mother of the family in her kitchen. Even though she didn't speak a word of English, she was able to communicate how she felt about me as her guest and is one of the sweetest people I've ever met. Seeing how they lived and getting a bit of a feel of their culture and how they related to each other was a real treat. Exposure to other...

The fondest memory I have from Algeria is the time I spent with the two local guys I met there. We were together from early morning to late evening every day. They show me many places I wouldnt have known on my own and got the chance to visit algerian private homes, take trips far out in the desert etc. All thanks to these guys. THE PHOTO: THE TWO GUYS I SPENT MY TIME WITH IN EL OUED.

Once again, I grew terribly fond of my travel companion, my sometimes grumpy camel Aidouni. Well, since we are all given to tempers, I just ignored the morning tantrums when he rather munched dates and brushes instead of going to 'work'...!

I was a 1st Lt. in the WAC. I was stationed in Algers and worked at Allied Force Headquaters in the St. Georges Hotel I admired the dedication to duty exhibited by all the people I worked with. I was attached to the 6715th WAC Communications Co. for mess, mail, and admin but I worked in the Editing Section of AFHQ.

Pierangelo's General Tip

by Pierangelo

Some millennia ago the desert was covered by an immense green forest inhabited by a lot of wild animals like buffalo, rhinoceros, crocodile, ant-eater, giraffe. Man breeded cows as you can see from rock paintings of about 6000 years b.C.. Some frescoes are really art masterpieces with scenes of war, hunt, cerimonies and sex.

The Tuareg are the last nobles of the world held today in respect and having a power upon an huge territory. They are tall and long-limbed like the ancient Egyptians, with gentle white features. Tuareg are a pre-islamic people and unfortunately are losing their tradition of legends and culture. (In the picture you can see a blacksmith forging silver jewels.)

On the surface of sand, near the shore of disappeared lakes, you can find easily fragments of pottery, arrow's points, axes and millstones. There are a lot of mysterious Solar and Lunar pre-islamic tombs. Two concentric circumferences is a very important neolithic symbol. The image in the picture catch because of his analogy with the key of Reitia in Veneti's religion.
