Headscarves

by janiebaxter

Headscarves are a must for ladies when you travel to Muslim countries like Algeria. It is not compulsory to cover your hair all the time but when you visit mosques or certain other places you will need a headscarf. If is a good idea to always carry one in your bag in case you arrive somewhere unplanned and need to cover your hair. They are also useful when travelling through dusty areas to cover your face or your nose and mouth.

Packing for a hiking trip with camels!

by djennewein

A strong backpack is recommended. (see my transportation tips for the story). I bought special light weight desert boots that were comfortable for walking, didn't let sand in, but somehow let air in. Bring a hat to keep the sun off your neck. Light weight clothes for the day and some thicker stuff for the night. It gets really cold at night! You don't get a chance to take a shower, but if you bring along a foldable wash container (look in a camping store) then you won't feel as dirty. I also brought wet-wipes. Oh and sunscreen is important! It is really hard to keep sand out of your camera. You can see that some of my pictures are scratched. Bring a sleeping bag that rates at least -5 C. And it is nice too to bring a silk inlay (to rate your bag even warmer) and a travel pillow for comfort. I think it is nice to bring some granola bars. You'll probably be eating the same stuff...

Medicines and other things are difficult to find

Special for girls: Cover your shoulders, arms and legs while you are in the cities, for the rest there's no problem, but when you find some people try to not show too much skin, it won't happen anything, but they will look at you making you feel uncomfortable.Take with you something to cover your head, the sun is really strong there. If not you can buy a "shesh" (typical cloth that tuaregs wear), "the passport of the desert" Think that once in the dessert it's almost impossible find a hospital or a place where you can find medical supplies, take with you whatever you think you are going to need, just in case you need it. Take it with you whatever you need, not only in Algeria, everywhere you go. Only that way you know the state of the films and tools. Taking into account the dry climate include in your luggage a some nutritive cream. And also in the hottest hours you will thank...
