Though the Sahara desert accounts only for a part of Algeria, this is usually what people are awaiting when speaking of Algeria. I have visited the desert on several occasions and will add new pages later. The photo given here shows a noon bivouac under the shade of an acacia (Acacia radiana*). Beware of the spines ! They are strong and can puncture a tire !
Ghardaia is another of the cities of the Mzab pentapole. It is more "open" and more modern than Beni Isguen, though, as in any other city of the Mzab, the old Ibadite traditions are kept. You will visit the market, the shops and if you are lucky, might attend a traditional show, such as the one appearing on the photo. This one was for a wedding.
Timgad lies on the northern slopes of the Aur?s mountains and was created ex nihilo as a military colony by the Emperor Trajan in AD 100. With its square enclosure and orthogonal design based on the cardo and decumanus, the two perpendicular routes running through the city, it is an excellent example of Roman town planning.It has been inscribed in 1982 on the World Heritage List.
Lambèze stands at the feet of the Aurès mountains. It was the seat of the third Roman Legion. In the 18th century, there remained extensive ruins. A jail was built in the mid 19th and there remain now only a few structures such as these Arches.
Algiers, the capital of Algeria is named Alger in French and El Djazaïr in Arab. It was Icosium for the Romans. It is also called "Alger la blanche" (Algiers the white one). El Jazaïr means “the archipelago” and refers to the islands that were in the bay, now included in the jetty. It is now the name of the whole country.Along the centuries, the city has first spread in the whole amphitheater looking bay, and later invaded the "plateaux" that overhang the city. Algiers has now over 3,000,000 inhabitants.
First day, the place felt like a construction yard . Full of place like this, built half way, and a lot of them already used as residential purpose, then continue built once the constructors get more cash.
Ghardaia is another beautiful oasis in the Sahara desert. At the gateway to the Sahara, this ancient city set in a rocky, rust-colored landscape has a busy and beautiful marketplace, striking Moorish architecture and an oasis. It is also the home of the Mozabites.I still remember our attempts on buying flour there, which was not all that easy!!! But we did manage in the end!!!
El Oued is the center of a number of oases, called Souf. El Oued is the biggest town and the most picturesque, too, being called the "City of 1000 Domes".Those domes are not only wonderful to look at, but they also serve a special purpose. It is called "desert architecture" and is a human solution on how to use air and bild breezes to the maximum so that the temperatures inside the dwellings are reduced as much as possible from the outdoor temperatures. White houses, smooth and soft corners in between date palms and a fantastic market has made El Oued an enjoyable place for me!
The Assekrem Circuit represents what most people get to see from the spectacular Hoggar Mountains. We went on a two day tour with three 4WD cars, because the roads are kind of bad!!!We went to the Eremitage de Père Foucauld. This was built around the hermit Charles de Foucauld in 1910, and is at an altitude of 2,600 metres a fantastic attraction. It can only be reached on foot. Added to the attraction is that this place is still in use, as a convent, still run by a handful of Catholic monks. We spent the night there and enjoyed the beautiful sunrise the next morning - awesome!

The total area of the Sahara is more than 9 million sq km, of which only a little over 200,000 sq km consist of partially fertile oasis.Sahara Desert geographically consists of the following regions: - the western Sahara, which is sometimes called the Sahara proper-the central Ahaggar Mountains and the Tibesti massif, a plateau region- the Libyan Desert in the east. There is no way for me to describe, what it is like to be in the desert. It is such an overwhelming feeling, that I don't find words for it!
