Algiers

by djennewein

Even if you only want to go to the desert, you probably can't avoid going to Algiers - if you fly in. I guess you could skip it if you drove in over the border. But for the kind of trip we did, it was necessary for us to stay overnight in Algiers. At first I was scared when I heard about how dangerous it is there, but it really did not have a dangerous atmosphere. It is very interesting to see, with many strange buildings.

Timimoun

by dabuwan

Timimoun is a nice, important oasis in the Grand Erg. The architecture of the town is in the typical mud sudanese style. It's a pleasant place to rest a bit and an ideal base to visit the interesting small villages around.

Ghardaia minarets

by dabuwan

Ghardaia is also an important religious city in Algeria. Most mosques and minarets have a "made of mud" look, typical of the Sudanese style. Access to the religious citadel close to Ghardaia is allowed only during daytime and with a guide.

Assekrem (Tassili Hoggar)

by Svillegas

The Tassili Hoggar is a zone of the South of Algeria, as always in my trip, in the heart of Sahara desert. There you can find the Assekrem, a mountain that seems to me made of "marron glacé".Try to stay there when the sun goes down, you will be part of a magnific scenery.

Visit Constantine

by jubbleguff

Constantine, to the east of Algiers, is a natural citadel lying across the River Rhumnel. Founded by the Carthaginians, who called it Cirta, it is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Algeria. There are many great sights such as the Ahmed Bey Palace and the Djamma el-Kebir Mosque.

Visit Tipaza Village

by jubbleguff

If you're interested in a bit of Algerian History then you couldn't come to a better place other than the coastal village of Tipaza. Its ruins and museums provide a great amount of information on the fascinating Algerian history, from the Phoenicians to Roman times.

Climb the Atlas Mountains

by jubbleguff

The Atlas are the most northerly of Africa's mountains, extending for over 1000 miles across Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. Although there are hardly any roads, most of the major mountains are easily accessible. The approach to the mountains is short, and there are mountain huts, plenty of guides, good trails, and mules to carry gear. All you need for an adventure in the mountains.

Wander through the huge Sahara...

by jubbleguff

Wander through the huge Sahara DesertAlmost four fifths of Algeria is taken up by the largest desert in the world: The Sahara. Ok there's not a lot to see here. Just, ya know, sand and stuff. But who knows, perhaps you'll be lucky enough to grab a camel ride and ride across the barren lands of emptiness. Quite a unique experience. Even more so if you manage to meet a few friendly Nomads on the way.

by sphynxxs

TimimounMost tourists going to the desert seem to get to Djanet and Ghardaia - great places of course, but Timimoun, the 'red oasis' is a nice little town as well, rather quiet at the outskirts of the grand erg and already with a distinctive 'African' character - one of the places where races and cultures mixed, and it´s still evident in a smooth, tolerant atmosphere

Pierangelo's Things to Do Tip

by Pierangelo

During the night the temperature lowers and over your head rise an amazing starry sky. The Milky Way, Orion, the Pleiads... in the magic atmosphere of a clear and brilliant light. In Tahaggart the thin crescent of the moon rised above the merlons and towers of an enchanted castle, bewitched and petrified world whose fantastic shapes excite the imagination.
