Though a very small oasis, Tit is famous because of the battle of Tit.
During the second part of the XIXth, the French tried to take control of the Sahara. The Tuaregs opposed violently. On February 16th 1881, they slaughtered the column led by Colonel Flatters at Tin-Tarabin.
On May 7th 1902, the Kel Ahaggar Tuaregs of Aménokal Moussa Ag Amstan (the Aménokal is the «king» of the Tuaregs) were defeated in Tit by Lieutenant Cottenest and more than 200 were killed. After that defeat, The Aménokal agreed to put an end to the battles against the French and to accept the French rule on the Sahara.
