Cistanche tubulosa is a close relative to the previous plant. It is not so beautiful but edible and is called "Tuaregs' asparagus". The stem must be collected and grilled before they go out of the soil. Once grown they are fibrous.It grow smaller when it parasites Cleome and is called "tamzelit" by the Tuaregs. On Calligonum, it is medium size and large on Tamaris. In both cases, they are called "aldéwan"
Cistanche violacea is a parasite plant that grows in the Hauts Plateaux and in several parts of the Sahara. It is close to the Orobanches. It has no chlorophyll and its roots emit suckers that fix them selves on the roots of various shrubs and feed on their sap. It is always amazing to discover its violet delicate flowers that do not fit with the look of their environment. It is always a pleasure for the eyes and for the photographer to find them !
Though the Hauts Plateaux has a scattered vegetation, camels happily make their living on it! The shape of the hump of a camel tells how is his condition. When the hump (made of fat) is flabby, the animal needs rest and food. When the hump is full and bulging out, the animal is in excellent condition and well fed. As you can see on the photos of a mother and her baby, they both are prosperous!
Stipa tenacissima also known as halfah grass, Needle grass, Esparto grass, Mexican feather grass is a grass of great ecological value (against desertification) and economic interest (chiefly in the paper industry). It occupies wide areas between the Tellian Atlas and the Saharian Atlas, ie in the Hauts Plateaux of Algeria. The fiber from the leaves and stems is used to make paper, mats, ropes, baskets etc. It is very strong and gives high quality paper. Though it is so strongly fibrous, camels feed on it as you can see on the photo!
The road from Ksar El Boukhari to Laghouat is straight for hours ! On both sides of the road, the landscape is almost the same. Flat !At first sight, there is nothing to look at. Though, when you make a stop (first photo with our party of three cars), you will see that in the background, there is an electrical power line running from North to south.You might also see, from time to time, far away, a flock of camels grazing freely on the tufts of alfa grass (second photo)
