Raising a Cuca to Luanda by Cabana_Boy Wherever you go, whatever you do, sampling the local beer is definite must. What do the locals drink, what beer is most popular, which beer is hardest to find, does it come in a half pint glass just like grandma used to drink…or better still, a full pint glass like I drink??? These are all good questions that need to be answered... In Angola and especially Luanda, there are several beers to choose from. Partisans, patriots and revolutionaries aside, my favorite is Cuca Beer!!! It lacks the formaldehyde taste that many Africa beers have; in fact, Cuca actually has a great taste, one so good I would proudly take it home to mom... So when you’re hanging out in the shanty towns of Luanda, kick back with a Cuca… Leave a Comment

Luanda is now a big, crowded town with more than 3 million people. Dowtown Luanda is not too big, but street traffic is so dense and slow that visiting customers will take you hours¡¡ Do not count on more than 2-3 visits breakfast to lunch. There is hardly a few Traffic lights, and every single crossroad is packed with cars trying to go in all directions. Rent aa air-con car with driver, and be patient¡¡
There are not regular taxis in Luanda. A few private drivers work as taxi men. Any single journey -whatever the distance in town- will cost you 25 usd$. Go & return 50 usd$. So, better rent a car (80 usd$) with driver (20 usd$). Extra money after 18.00 p.m.

the lackluster Eka... by Cabana_Boy I'll skip my usual intro to the Beer Hunt and get right to the point of this review, which is Eka!!! Eka is another beer produced in Angola and with a quick search of the Internet one finds the brains behind the brand…it’s the 47% ownership by Heineken and I love the “Corporate” tag-line on their website with regard to Eka, “Continued production in unstable market. The political situation in Angola continues to give cause for concern, despite recent positive developments. Our two breweries there are making every effort to continue production.” Probably taken directly from the pages of their annual report to shareholders... With an open mind I gave Eka a try one evening and quickly decided that I wouldn’t even give this stuff to the Sheriff of Cherry Lane, he spent time in Angola you know… Anyway, I think Heineken should probably drop a few more Euros into some R&D for this brew or buy a better Angolan brand like Cuca… Leave a Comment

Friends by scarm Take some time to meet some local people. They are generally guarded and skeptical, at first, but this wears off pretty fast if they sense that you are just another human being. Nothing better than a good laugh with some locals. Tell them something you like about Angola, and you will have a friend for life!
Muita saudade dos momentos com os meus caros amigos Angolanos. Leave a Comment
