Mussulo, Luanda by solopes A few kilometers far from Luanda, Mussulo Island was a paradise. Now that the economy is recovering, and Luanda starts attracting again, some visitors, I'm curious about what they will do in that Island or with what remains of it. But it surely is an opportunity, and something to visit in my necessary future visit. Leave a Comment

The amazing Scenery of Kissama by jungleboy Kissama is a huge game reserve south of Luanda. The parks wildlife was completely wiped out during the war but a program called Noahs Ark has been set up to reintroduce elephants and other animals to Angola. There is accomodation for visitors which is excellent and the scenery is also spectaular. The rangers were very friendly and informative. We went out on a couple of safari drives in a unimog and were even taken on a trek through the bush to find elephants. Tickets for the park can be bought from the forum hotel in Luanda. NEW YEARS EVE by scarm I happened to be in Luanda for the New Years Eve Celebration, which was highlighted by a private party at the Fortaleza and a fireworks extravaganza that could be seen from all points in the lower city. The fireworks were actually quite impressive and continued for about one half an hour. Copius quantities of alcohol were consumed at the party at the fort. Events like these that attract crowds are very popular in Angola. I prefer to stay away from the fray though, as the crowds can be a little overwhelming. Leave a Comment Directions: Happens once a year! Of course.

Lined in front of town, one narrow stripe of sand, ten kilometers long, closes the bay, and provides several beaches. The ocean side is a clean and usually safe open sea, the land side is a calm lake not recommended for health reasons. But some kids don't pay any attention to it. Leave a Comment

Shipwreck at the South of Mussulo by jungleboy A 50km strip of land that stretches down the coast of Angola from Luanda. The strip shelters the angolan coast from the Atlantic and protects sand banks, clear blue water and even flamingos on the salt pans. With so much space it is very easy to find yourself on a piece of deserted white sand beach relaxing away from the city. Leave a Comment Address: 10km south of LuandaDirections: Can be reached by boat from Luanda or you can drive by 4x4.

Luanda - Angola by solopes Not suitable to swim, the bay of Luanda is wonderful, no matter the point from where you observe it, day or night. Miramar, a high quarter, is, maybe, the best point to do it. And if you want to swim, the facing island is only a long and narrow strip with open waters. Leave a Comment

High above the city of Luanda is a white fort callled Fortaleza. This is a landmark building in Luanda and has been built by the Portuguese colonialists in the 17th century as a vantage point for invaders. Heavily fortified, the fort has been a symbol of colonial power in Angola. Now that Angola is independent, the fort is now a museum, albeit with very little displays to show. But it is a fantastic place to visit because it offers a great view of the Marginal and the Ilha on the north and the Presidential palace on its western vantage. Leave a Comment Address: Just south of the MarginalDirections: Drive down the Marginal, there is a white structure on top of the hill. You can't miss it!

Luanda - Angola by solopes In the southern outskirts of Luanda, Corimba invites to swim. With a boat, the island of Mussulo is the top destination but not beating the beauty of the coast (This, before civil war. But I'm curious to see it again). Leave a Comment

This small old white church building by the southern shores of Luanda has been transformed into an eerie museum called the Museo da Esclavatura or the Slave Museum. Luanda was one of the major ports where African slaves were transported to the Americas by European colonisers. Thousands of Angolans ended up in Brazil. The museum itself does not have much to show. Photographs and lithographs on the slave trade hang on the wall and some incarceration implements are on display. The building itself is beautiful as it fornlornly stands on a barren rock overlooking the Atlantic ocean. It has a bald boabab tree to keep it company. Leave a Comment Address: BenficaDirections: Go past the Benfica market and the golf course. The small white building stands out along the coast.

Banco Nacional De Angola by jungleboy This building really is a landmark and you can't really miss it when visiting Luanda. Right at the centre of the waterfront 'Marginal' this amazing building dominates the city centre. Not quite what I was expecting to see when I first came to Angola! Just one of many beautiful colonial buildings in Luanda... Leave a Comment Address: The Marginal
