It's dark, very dark--luckily the host showed us to our seats near the dance floor. Good size dance floor was always full with mostly 20-30 somethings, but in every club there always seems to be a gang who's older too. Music was current African and American rap. The standard service of a bottle and glasses at the small table where we sat was comparatively very nice. And...it's not that dark once your eyes get adjusted.

Cotonou knows some nightclubs, but I never visited them because I realy hated the music over there (try lonely planet). There are also some cinema's, and once in a while the cultural centra of America and France show movies. But always doubed in French.
If you're a lucky you can visit a private party. Interesting to see, but with a lot of bad music and more alcohol then the moderate human being can have.
I almost forget to mention the concerts or shows. I visited a show, sponsored by Fine cigarettes with some artists who played theire tapes and when they weren't busy with the girls in the public, they also song.
It was amusing to see, but didn't had a quality.

Cotonou knows a lot of little bars where you can get a strong drink. They are nice places for sitting down and drinking and talking with people (but don't trust them, they will try to take profit out of you). However its not very smart to try to overdrink an african, because these guys have an amazing liver. After that you can always eat something because even at night business goes on.

After dusk, you've to check out the Jonquet district, it's really great. On the side of the street stands a whole line of prostitues grabing you by the arm, and after them you'll pass the rasta's smoking grass. And also very interesting are the many harddrugs dealers and dealers of the black market. Just take a look, see and feel the energy of this all (but I won't recommend you to accept a deal or something).

Challa Ogoi is another drinking spot in the Jonquet area of Cotonou. The noisy traffic from the 4-lane Rue 303 is only 15 meters away. Look for the tall water tower and you will find this place.
