by MayBarker

We took a two day (overnight) trip from Victoria Falls to Chobe National Park. We saw hippos, elephants, lions, close up. BRILLIANT ACCOMMODATION TOO. Our 'tent accommodation' turned out to be the most luxurious tent we had ever seen. Dancing through the butterflies to get to our tent, and seeing all the animals close up on our boat trip and safari, were all memorable.

Visit the Okavango Delta.

We were spending the night out in bush and sleeping in our little tent, when we suddenly woke up hearing some cracking noise in the wood. There was a huge elephant tearing down branches from the tree right behind our sleeping place. Our camp fire was out and our guide in the other tent was fast asleep. PANIC! We didn't move and almost forgot to breath. After about 3 minutes (it seemed like hours) our guide woke up and chased the elephant away, but for the rest of the night we couldn't sleep at all....

When in Botswana one must most defenitly go to the okavango delta. All animals that want to be seen will be in there most natural surroundings. You will see the big five wich is the lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and cheeta. Then go to the hills near Maun where you shall see the most cunning and majestic animal of all time, the leopard! My best memory will have to be when we where in the delta in an open top safari truck, completly surrounded by a huge herd of elephants. Very intimidating in this almost ancient delta!

Take the helicopter ride over the Delta! It is really the only way to appreciate how important this river area is to the ecosystem of this region. It is mind blowing how a little slice of luch landscape can be so important to a variety of life. We camped for three days in the delta and 'saw' only a limited amount of wildlife. Get up in the air and you see how much was actually always in our presence! I have three. 1. Sunset in a dugout canoe on the Delta. 2. Swinging children around like airplanes in a gas station lot. 3. My introductory soldier story.

The eco system of the delta is very big. The water channels are home to many species, among them crocodiles. We used a special speed boat for getting into the hidden water lagoons of the river and get a close look at the fauna and flora. Rasta, a local guide, taking out a young crocodile from the delta. It was only for few minutes of course.

Chobe National Park,(see Chobe NP Travelogue for more pictures) for me even better than Okavango, a place full of animals and vegetation, wonderful landscapes that had nothing to envy National Geography documentals!!!Chobe National Park, a cared national park where only official guides are allowed in. There are several kind of excursions: flight, driving game or boatcruise. Driving game can only be done with official guides, driving special open trucks. It usually lasts 3 hours and is made in sunset or at dawn, when cats are more active. Guides are good and good english speakers and know a lot about animals. Our´s name was Rambo from Go Wild! and he was lovely. It´s amazing how animals are not scared of human beings at all: they would look with just the same curiosity as you and then go on with their own life. I always had the sensation that I could understand them, that they were...

Visit Okavango Delta, (see Okavango Travelogue for more pictures)a lovely place full of meanders and vegetation, where the only transport from island to island is a fiber glass kind of canoe named mokoro which in the past was made from the wood of the real mokoro, an enormous tree with a big cope with kind of green beans falling from its branches. Nowadays they are made of fiber glass because of echological reasons!!In Okavango, you may not find many big animals, but it´s a paradise for birdwatchers. Thousands of different birds you may watch and, even more, hear, a sound like paradise as much in the sunset and in the dawn. My favourite one was one who sounded like a whistle, clear and loud, and proud and happy... gorgeous!! - The 40 mn flight from the closest city, Maun, in a light plane, enjoying a wonderful view of the delta, the winding rivers sometimes covered by green vegetation,...

Get way out into the Okavango Delta and see the big game that Botswana is known for. The delta feels so primeval its easy to imagine yourself in a time thousands of years past. My most vivid memory is being chased by an irritated bull elephant in our camp! WOW. But I'll also never forget the incredible sounds and scents of the bush.
