    Escape from sodium light

Favorite thing: Bear in mind that you will have to travel very long distances to get around Botswana. There are not many large communities to the west of Gaborone’s suburbs and virtually no communities between Nata and Kasane in the north. You’ll be looking at seven or eight hour bus rides, so get to the bus stand early if you don’t want to stand all the way. If you get a lift on the back of a 4x4 don’t be tempted to sit down while travelling on the rough tracks, as you’ll be badly bruised, stand up and enjoy the view. If you’ve still managed to stay on by the time the truck hits the Trans Kalahari Highway, sit down immediately and hold on to your hats and glasses, as the 4x4 goes into warp speed. We travelled in July and the night time desert temperatures frequently drop to zero or below. The sand can contain a lot of moisture, we didn’t bring sleeping rolls and were surprised to find condensation on the inside of our tent groundsheet. Apart from all that, it's a wonderful getaway from modern life and light pollution.

Fondest memory: Meeting Andrea Hardbattle, her two sons and the people of her mother's village. Also, Chris and Jeanette Woolcott, Gurt and Setano and all the people on the many bus rides.
