Hunter/Gatherers

by David&Pauline

The San people are hunter/gatherers, though hunting is regulated; gathering is still a daily way of life. If you stay at Buitsivango you can accompany the Nharo San women on their foraging and even cook up the desert foods you’ve collected for lunch. It is wonderful to see how sharp eyed these women are, a small fibre poking above the ground points the way to a water tuber the size of a chicken. A treat for you is that if you are there at the right time of year, you might even find truffles. We were lucky enough to taste some that Andrea had frozen. The men mostly work as farmers, looking after Buitsivango cattle, sheep and goats. Not being beef eaters, back in Britain, we were amazed by the quality of the beef. This is where the hunter’s tradition comes into the rearing of the cattle; the quality of the meat is down to the expertise of the hunter, a quick clean dispatch.
