    Mokoro Ride
    by Radiomom
Some seasoned safari-takers slight this serene activity, but maybe we were just lucky and found it gorgeous. This is how the bushmen navigated through the delta, using channels created by the wildlife (usually hippos, but other animals too).

Mokoro are long, thin duggout canoes -- well traditionally that's what they were. Now they are more likely to be aluminum or fiberglass. You ride very low in the water, almost eye-level with the water lily pads. I loved it.

Since we were there in the late fall/winter month of May, the mosquito population had died off. Also, the temperatures were ideal, about 75 degrees in the mornings and late afternoons.

October in Botswana is very hot temperatures goes upto 40 degrees, the air is still and the heat seems to have a physical force.
Take a game drive in Chobe national park. , the great thing about october is animals feel the heat too- so like like school kids they are in abundance at the river. In chobe alone there are 45000 elephants- said to be the highest concentration in the world,
Along the river there will be elephants abound , the younger ones often playful, there will be hippos grazing with th cattle and buffalo on sedudu. deep in the bush there will be girrafes.

dont afford to miss this crucial month.

BOB’s your uncle! OK, maybe he is not. The saying “Bob’s your uncle” is an English expression meaning life is great. The First National Bank (Bank Of Botswana) has an extensive network of ATM’s across Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. Their helpful website, listed below, has a Branch and/or ATM finder so you can get your money for your adventures. They have a huge network and they often have ATM’s at petrol garages near border areas and in shopping areas. Just where you need your cash to be. So don’t worry about carrying large amounts of cash in Southern Africa. BOB’s your uncle!

Chobe was THE place to see elephants while I was travelling thru southern Africa. We also saw baboons, warthogs, water buffalo and various antelope but the elephants were my favourite.

We parked by a large watering hole and watched an elephant pool party for at least 30 minutes, until an elephant appeared too close for comfort and charged at our small jeep. Our driver honked the horn and revved the engine to scare him away. It was quite an experience.

I had done several safari drives on land, so it was a unique experience to do one by boat. We saw animals both on shore and in the water. And alot of bird life too.

It was especially exciting to see the hippos surfacing from under the water.

see my travelogue for more animals.

The Okavango Delta is called "Africa's largest and most beautiful oasis". The Okavango River flows from Angola but never reaches the sea. Instead, it empties over the sands of the Kalahari desert creating a unique fresh water delta which is a giant water hole for many of Africa's big game. This blue green wilderness is also home to over 80 species of fish and countless birds. Huge reed beds and stands of papyrus can also be found here.

I was lucky to have the opportunity to take a flight above the Okavango Delta. We spotted a herd of water buffalo, giraffe and these elephants.

It was a small 4 seater airplane which originated in Maun. The flight was 45 min and cost about $50.

    Savuti area, elephants

Savuti, in the south-west part of the Chobe NP, is part of the Mababe Depression, a remnant of a large lake that once covered much of northern Botswana. In the Savuti area with marshes is a lot of game.

Near Savuticamp at a pool we saw 40 elephants, splashing and pushing, at a distance of 10M. Then suddenly two start a fight at only 3M of our truck. Wow, the only thing you can do is, shoot your picture.

  • You add another level of excitement to your game viewing when you go on a game walk. Obviously on these you will not see the big game close up - or you hope you don't. The guides will be keeping their eyes open for tracks of any animals that might be dangerous to you on foot. We had to move to another site on one wallk when we came across the tracks of a lone buffalo, definitely something you don't want to meet on foot. In fact after hippo's these are among the biggest man killers in Africa. As you walk along you feel incredibly exposed, especially as you walk past clumps of bushes that look just like the one you saw lions around yesterday.
It is especially important when walking that you wear clothes that are very neutral coloured so you don't stand out too much. This has a double effect, it could attract predators or more importantly scare away the more timid game.

This is my highly versatile friend – Mr. Bucket. Before you think I have gone totally mad, just read on. I may be mad, but this is a friend you need for any sort of stays in Africa. So what can Mr. Bucket do for you? Well, Mr. Bucket holds water. So he can keep water for emergency drinking, putting out campfires, washing out toilets/ground, and for washing clothes. He is also indispensable for taking a bath when the water stops running. He can even store his own water. On top of all this Mr. Bucket can help you when he’s dry too. He holds things for you to carry or store. He’s great for storing liquid containers like cleaners and alcohol that could leak out. Yep, Mr. Bucket – leave home with it! When you are finished with Mr. Bucket please leave him for a local person to use.

Mr. Bucket is available at fine stores, and no so fine stores, all over Africa for about 50 US cents - $2. Now that’s a bargain. The first pictured Mr. Bucket started with me in Ghanzi and went along for the ride to Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa & Lesotho. I gave him to another traveller in Johannesburg.

From the unpaved airstrip to our camp is a nice 25 minutes walk by a bushpath.
The luggage is transported by mokoro's.
Near the Chiefs Island are several camps. We brought our own tents and stayed at Oddball's Camp, a relaxed place with a nice bar, looking at the scenic lagoon with mokoro's.
