Entering Botswana

by duke0123

When you enter Botswana directly from your home country the best way is by plane. If you're coming from another African country it's possible to enter Botswana by car (by plane is possible too of course).Getting around in Botswana is possible by train but when you want to visit National Parks the best way is by 4WD.

4WD is essential

by tony_c

If you want to see any animals at all in Botswana, a 4WD drive vehicle is essential. A normal saloon car will not be able to negotiate the sand tracks in any of the National Parks. Anyway there are only about three tarmac roads in the whole country !

By car from Johannesburg

by tompt

You can go to Botswana by car from Johannesburg, South Africa.Or from neighbouring Zimbabwe.4 wheel drive is probably best. Both times we visited we travelled in a truck built to accomodate a touristgroup. It was good, but not very fast.

Do it differently

Once you're into southern Africa via the Johannesburg Hub,hire yourself a car and drive to Botswan, it's only 5 hours.===alternatively, go by train, the train to Zimbabwe travels via Botswana.===no steam train, it's diesel nowadays

Mom and Pop Airlines

by kucha

We did a lot of flying on some very, very old planes! Flying in from Zimbabwe means climbing on board a vintage DC-3 -- or at least it did 12 years ago. Getting into the Delta means getting on board a mom-and-pop single engine plane. In our case, it was actually a pop-and-son operation, with the son being taught how to fly right in front of us! Yes, he flew us in a good part of the journey. Not for the faint of heart...

By plane or road or even train. Most of plane traffic goes trough South Africa.Roads are pretty good and they are working on improvement every single day.Gaborone is in the mess for a while for that reason.

This is how close we got to the lions with the Chobe Game Lodge drivers. We were parked, and this lion walked right next to our car. This picture was taken by my son looking down from his seat in the Jeep at the lioness. The edge you see is the half side of the car. It's both thrilling and a bit frightening as the safari vehicles have NO windows and only half sides, and just a tarp for the roof

Be careful in Chobe if you're driving yourself. The going is deep sand in the park. We saw one guy get stuck and he was very scared when he heard there were lions nearby. A guide will also help you spot the lions and other game that might be hard to find. Also try and take a boat ride on the Chobe river to see different activities. We saw elephants swimming while doing this -- something you'll never get to see in a zoo!

To get to Botswana is best by air. Most likely you will fly into victoria falls in zimbabwe. Then take a light aircraft to your destination in Botswana.OOnce again light aircraft or if you are on an adventure take a four wheel drive truck.

the best way to get to the Okavango is by plane from Maun. I took a private plane from there and the flight in it self is also a great exprience. The shadow of the plane is gliding over water holes, swamps, deserts and finaly the delta it self.
