This is wildlife country. Be on alert when venturing into the bush. Be extremely cauteous at night when camping in the bush.Travelling at night is very dangerous as the roads are littered with stray animals seeking the warmth of the sunbaked tarmac road. When visiting the Makgadikgadi Pans, make sure about accessibility during the wet seasons, and make sure which routes are recommended.

Try as far as possible to avoid driving after sunset as you may hit a stray donkey or wild animal on the road.

Road hazards

by bonimae

Botswana has lovely roads and very few cars traveling on them, but do not give in to the temptation to speed or drive at night. There are creatures sharing the roads that present a hazard.

In Kasane we met two hippos. You can see one of them. Hippos are the most dangerous animals in Namibia and in Botswana. They kill many people.

Be Careful

The camps are all open and you can get animals wandering around them. Obey the signs. At Duma Tau camp we found Lion tracks over the top of our footprints after only a hour or so in camp.

Beware of the hippos. One week prior to our arrival, a hippo bit through a Mokoro boat, and pierced a man's arm in half.
