    Visit to the village

After the audience with the Gan king his wife invited us to join her into the village. I appreciated that she showed us around and gave explanations. We felt more as her guests than as intruders in the daily life of the villagers .

As usual the kids in the village were very curious and liked to meet us. Some of them also liked to be on the pictures and look at theirselves at the screen of het digital camera.

    Audience with the king

Our guide, one of the wives of the king proposed us an audience with the king. We learned there is a certain etiquette to meet the king. He is not known by his name, but called 'Sa Majesté'. You are not supposed to approach him and shake hands.

We sat down on the wooden benches at some distance of the king on his stool. After some formalities he turned out to be a friendly young man very willing to answer questions about his village, Gan customs, royal succesion. He was also interested in who we are.

At the end he give me his business card. And invited me as an agricultural engineer and landscape archtitect to visit his village again and discuss with him the ecological issues in his kingdom.

    Ancestral tombs of Obiré

Obiré is the capital of the Gan and the seat of the current king.

We came to visit the ancestral tombs. In 1990 the sanctuaries are rebuilt and restored with German aid. The entrance is 1500 CFA. We were guided around by one of the wives of his majesty the Gan king the 29th.

The sanctuaries are rectangular. In many of them are statues of the ancestors, some with names, some not. Our guide did not knwo all the names, but from some of the ancestors she could tell some stories.
