The African Nile crocodile is the most common crocodile in Africa. Totally there are 13 crocodile species in Africa. In Burkina Faso the crocodile is considered as a sacred animal.

We decided to visit the sacred crocodile lake of Bazoulé. The place is not far from Ouagadougou an can be visited easily in a one day trip in combination with the King's Palace in Kokologo.

It is told that the sacred lake is centuries old and contains more than 100 African Nile Crocodiles. It is also said that the crocodiles in these lakes in Burkina Faso are more approachable than in other countreis.

Between the ticket office and the sacred crocrodile lake is also a tortoise conservation centre. The largest continental land tortoise in Africa is threatened with extinction. In some countries in the Sahel they are killed for their meat.

In Burkina Faso they are believed to link men and the spirits as a sign of virtue, happiness, fertility and longevity. The tortoises can live for 150 years.

We saw some of the tortoises. They is told there must be around 10 older ones and more than 15 smaller ones.

Approaching the lake I first saw no crocodiles, but coming closer I saw the first three crocodiles and even more. They come really close to the shore, maybe because thery think they can get a chicken.

I never came so close to crocodiles in the wild. In Africa they always told me to keep a certain distance to crocodiles. The local guide and gamekeeper told us not to be afraid. Nobody was ever been bitten by one of them. After some hesitation I came closer to shoot my pics.

Before we started our visit to the lake with the sacred crocodiles we had first a luchbreak in the bar & restaurant at the entrance to the lake. In the garden were nice shady places covered by a roof.

In the garden we prepared and took our own light picknick lunch and ordered the drinks from the bar. In the garden were some funny statues of animals.

Favorite Dish: Cool beverages. We prepared our picknick lunch ourselves with bread, eggs, beans, banana's and cheese.

On the way back from the sacred lake and the tortoise conservation centre we saw a colourfully pianted artisanal centre with weavers, wood and bronze workers.

In the shop of the cooperation of local artists you can buy work of the weavers, paintings and bronze and wooden statues. I liked some of them, but they were too big to travel with and to take home.

What to buy: The paintings and statues look original, not the usual African stuff and airport art.
