Tengrela Things to Do
The Tengrela lake is especially well-known for the hippos. The best chance of seeing hippo's is in the drier months from January to April. The best time of the day is early morning from 7.00-8.00 or in the late afternoon when the hippos are most active.
Making a boatrrip at the lake by piroque brings you closer to the hippos. We made the boattrip at the lake in February late morning. We were lucky, at the other side of the lake we saw a group of hippos. We did not come close, though the people of Tengrela say that the holy hippos never have attacked somebody.
Tengrela and its lake is also a laid-back place to hang around. It's nice daytrip from Banfora. You can have a picknick at the lakeside in the shade of trees and enjoy the lake.
There are also some campements at the lakeside. You can order drinks and food at the buvette.
We waited in campement La Rengara for the boatsman and took a drink under the shady mangotrees.Related to:
- Budget Travel
The boattrip in the canoe at the Lake Tengrela is a pleasant trip. There is a lot of birdlife at and around the lake. It looks like the birds are walking on the water, while they stand at the huge leaves of the waterlillies.
Even if you don't see hippos, for which the lake is very well-known, it is a nice trip. Enjoy the environment, the waterplants, the green, the water. The water is very clear. I liked the very relaxed and peaceful trip.
At the campement close to the landingplace of the canoes we took a rest and some drinks. While waiting fro the boatsman we had also plenty of time to look at the stands with local craft. In Tengrela the women make baskets.
The baskets were brightly coloured in red/purple and turqoise/green. There were also balafons and small containers made of decorated calebasses.
Tengrela Warnings and Dangers
The boattrip at the lake is great. The boats look maybe a bit rickety and unstable when boarding, but at the lake you will feel safe and peaceful.
Keep in mind that there can be a lot of water on the bottom of the piroques, so don't wear your fancy shoes.
Embarking can be a bit unstable stepping from one piroque to the other. The boatman will give you a hand.
And be careful not all the sitting shelves were nailed. One of my fellowtravellers fell down at the wet bottom of the boat.
Enjoy your boattrip !
