I found Burkina Faso to be a very safe place to travel. However, I would always avoid the area around the main market in Ouagadougou after dark: it's cavernous and a little unnerving, and there have been many muggings southwest of this area in particular. I walked in many other areas late at night without feeling in any danger, but always took a taxi through this area. Also, if you are taking a taxi very late at night, take a good look at the driver: I found that it was not uncommon to come across a drunk driver waiting for a fare at night, and not worth the risk to your own life and limb. by Narviking I found Burkina Faso to be a very safe country. Be however careful in Ouagadougou as I heard there is alot of pickpockets around. We felt very safe when going around in the country but dont be stupid and show money and values to people, then you may be robbed as you would in any country. my only joyfull danger...!!! by hydronetta I can hardly imagine anyone encountering problems while travelling around Burkina. Locals are friendly and despite widespread poverty there had been minimal harassments. These were mainly in touristy areas where people have "discovered" that easy money can be made out of tourists. Besides no police check outs were experienced. The only "danger" I experienced was the the joyfull hordes of children shouting cheerfully around me!!!!!

a typical dust road by hydronetta If you fancy DSLR cameras and you have several lenses that you wish to use while touring around Burkina, well there are bad news. At the time of our visit it was the dry season, meaning that all dirt roads (even inside the cities) were full of red african dust. By the end of the day a fine layer of red dust was covering most of our clothes and hair not to mention my camera!! Still I am not sure if the newer sensor cleaning systems can be effective. So be very careful when you change lenses or take a cleaning system with you (if you trust yourself doing it)
