There plenty of local markets everywhere you go in Douala where one can find local art, mostly wood cravings and jewelry. Also, do yourself a favor and sample the local tomatoes, they're excellent...
What to buy: If you're lucky and looking for that special something to give you a little juju, get yourself a Bacongo or Powerman...
What to pay: Haggle 'em down to at least half their opening bid...

marche de fluers is a must for souvenirs, wood objects etc.
a nice area to walk around (behind the flower stalls).
i didnt feel anything for the area around akwa palace (rue de liberty etc) lots of varied shops were in this area but aside from one major sports shop the majority were over priced and were not worth visiting. the sports shop (the name escapes me) was excellent, varied and value for money.
the others in this area were all over priced.
