Along the main highway from Douala to Limber and not far from town, a major eruption of Mount Cameroon in 1999 resulted in a tongue of lava about 15 meters high flowing across the main coastal highway. The lava did not reach the sea, and a short detour has since been built. An effort was made to convert the site into a tourist attraction by building a walkway up the side of the lava flow and a small tourist center at the base, but at the time I visited in 2010, the tourist center had evidently not been staffed for some time, and the area where the old road runs under the lava flow had become an impromptu garbage dump. Still, its an interesting demonstration of the power of nature.
