From Ponta do Sol we take an aluguer to Corda at 900 meters above sea level and began the descent. We never thought that walking down is exhausting, but I know better now...
Anyhow, the views compensate for all efforts.
The "road" is only a small mountain path, you really need a guidebook to find your way. Although think about your knees, it´s 900 meters descent.
After the descent there are about 4 to 5 km walking in the valley (you arrive there at noon), no spectacular views, if possible take an aluguer back.

The walk to the "mountain village" of Fontainhas is a must! The road is easy to find and the views back to Ponta do Sol or to the mounains are spectacular!
This walk is also for not very exercised people, but bear in mind that in midday it´s very hot and at the road there is almost no shade (take enough water and a headdress).
We went up to the ridge, the road is going on to another small village, but starting late, we wanted to be back before sunset, and returned.
To do any hiking in Santo Antao, buy a hiking book and look for tours according to your liking.

At the entrance of the centre of the village is a beautiful green square.
This square is a good orientation point in the village.
At the north side of this square is a nice small chuch in a bright white color.
At the square you will always see some local people, sitting on a bench, chatting, visiting the church ...

Ribeira Grande in the north of the island is the capital.
There are a few hotels, restaurants and an internetcafé.
The town looks nice with houses in all kind off colours.
It's nice to stay here for a few days or more depending of how many walks you intend to make.
It's very relaxed to walk around. There are not many foreigners.
Everywhere In Cape Verde we met a lot of dutch Capeverdians, visiting their family or home-town during holidays.

Ponta do Sol is at the most nothern spot of the island, five KMs from Ribeira Grande.
Also a good place to stay a few days and as starting point for walks.
The place has a very pleasant atmosphere with colourfull streets and a nice small port.
Everywhere you see and feel the ocean.

Not far from the port of Ponta do Sol we saw this colourful street along the ocean with colourfull painted houses.
There are some nice shops in this street.

There are some markets in Santo Antão, but the best way to find the freshest fish or seafood is to meet the fishermen as they arrive and bargain for their product.
