Somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean there are bottles floating with a message inside. The message is from me and asks the finder of any of these bottles to let me know where they find them. I have been doing this for years and only ever had 2 found – 1 in Venezuela and the other in Thailand. Before I travelled to Cape Verde I laminated sheets of bright...more
IPNET is a cracking new internet place in Sal that offers fast speeds and modern equipment. One of the owners, Patrizia, was very friendly and helpful. They are Italian, and their website is in Italian, but they do speak English as well. I stopped in because I needed to do some quick banking on-line. I was done as quick as a flash. They have modern...more
Sal has ATM cash machines. In fact they seem to be plagued with them. Despite what the guidebooks say, there are ATM’s on Sal in the airport, Espargos and in Santa Maria. In Santa Maria they are in the hotels and numerous banks. There is absolutely no issue finding one. They belong to the VISA, Plus and Venti4 cash networks. Quite a few businesses...more
Without a doubt, the most picturesque place on the island is PEDRA DO LUME, the name given to a crater of the now extinct volcano. Entry to the crater was made possible by an artificial tunnel built in 1804. The crater is at sea-level, and even though the sea is 1 km away the water manages to filter in. The salt pits of Santa Maria, although not in...more
This is a nice restaurant right on the beach. Its french managed and serves Cabo Verdian/Creole Cuisine. Clients seem to return often and some it seemed ate only exclusively there. The Bar is well stocked and serves various cocktails for its guests. The wine list is good though prices are a little steep because the bottles have to be imported. For...more
This one is a “can´t miss”, it´s not the food or the service, is everything. The food is a buffet on weekends or Rodizio in the other nights, nothing very impressive, but the show really gets you going… Very nice atmosphere, good show. Prepare for some African dances. try the Caipirinhas!!!more
Fridays and Saturdays are hot nights on this Bar, the crowd gets together to watch the concert of the local reggae band and afterwards the drums from Africa. This bar is the most typical in Santa Maria, have a seat and a beer in the flag painted tables of the bar. You can also order something to eat, the fish cachupa is delicious. As casual as you...more
In Santa Maria are some small shops.
For food & drinks there are some small supermercados, some boutiques for bath & beachwear. Not much choice.
There are not many capeverdian handicrafts available, but you can find some jewellery and other articles of local materials.
In the marquet you can find a lot of statues and other things of the african continent, especially Senegal. Nothing very special.
In Mindelo we found a shop with very special
objects and jewellery from the african continent (I'm a collector). The owner told us to open a second shop in Santa Maria very soon (in summer 2002 we saw the shop, but it wasn't still open).
Be careful with the water, drink ONLY botlled water.
During my stay there some people at the hotel had severe stomach problems...
Otherwise go ahead enjoy
Ilha do Sal is the tourist trap itself.
There are lots of hollyday programs at travel agencies. You will end up for a week or two on a deserted island with not that much to see.
If you are looking to spend days in the hotel swimmingpool, that's ok, but if you want to meet locals, visit cultural spots, it's defenetely not the place.
Unique Suggestions: Stay the shorter period of time.
I, for instance, had to stay there one night because of flying schedules.
Fun Alternatives: All the other islands in Cape Verde are worthwhile
Never, never, but never forget some anti-diarrhea medicine.Even if you don't drink tap water and only drink bottled water; even if you wash your teeth with bottled water; even if you don't use ice... you still have a good chance of getting diarrhea!!!! Believe me, I know....So don't take any chances. It can ruin your holidays!!!!more
Plenty of waves and wind 24 hours per day!
Are you ready?
Equipment: In Sal you can get windsurf gear quite everywhere
FOR ADULTS ONLY!This is a picture of the driver who took me to the airport. He is very friendly and polite. He helped everyone with their bags. He is also a safe driver. How did he smell? Just fine. No issues. In fact I liked the guy, so I cut out his face so he won't get into trouble. So what did he do? For some reason he decided that it would be...more
