MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE, Ilha do Sal

DAO Says:  Somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean there are bottles floating with a message inside. The message is from me and asks the finder of any of these bottles to let me know where they find them. I have been doing this for years and only ever had 2 found – 1 in Venezuela and the other...

FAST INTERNET - WIRELESS IF YOU NEED IT !, Ilha do Sal

DAO Says:  IPNET is a cracking new internet place in Sal that offers fast speeds and modern equipment. One of the owners, Patrizia, was very friendly and helpful. They are Italian, and their website is in Italian, but they do speak English as well. I stopped in because I needed to do...

ATM'S

ATM'S, Ilha do Sal

DAO Says:  Sal has ATM cash machines. In fact they seem to be plagued with them. Despite what the guidebooks say, there are ATM’s on Sal in the airport, Espargos and in Santa Maria. In Santa Maria they are in the hotels and numerous banks. There is absolutely no issue finding one. They...

Hang out, chill out

Hang out, chill out, Ilha do Sal

Gido Says:  The best thing to do on Sal is hanging out at Santa Maria near the pier. There's always something to see or do, the water is crystal clear, local kids are doing summersaults while local men bring home 2 meter long tunafish.

pedra do lume

pedra do lume, Ilha do Sal

pink63 Says:  Without a doubt, the most picturesque place on the island is PEDRA DO LUME, the name given to a crater of the now extinct volcano. Entry to the crater was made possible by an artificial tunnel built in 1804. The crater is at sea-level, and even though the sea is 1 km away...

The beach

The beach, Ilha do Sal

bambino36 Says:  The beaches in the island are absolutely excellent. The warm water, around 26º/28ºC, the quietness and the amazingly thin white sand are the paradise for everyone who wants to spend sometime at the beach.

meet people, they'll invite you: Fresh seafood..., Ilha do Sal

Gido Says:  It does not get any fresher than this. Meet some locals and they'll invite you to join them for dinner. Eating together is one of the things Cape Verdeans enjoy most. So if you like fresh squid... join the party.

Restaurant Atlantis: Nice view and good food

Restaurant Atlantis: Nice view and good food, Ilha do Sal

Pirata Bar: Party hard!

Pirata Bar: Party hard!, Ilha do Sal

Gido Says:  The Pirata Bar is a favourite with tourists as well as locals. People party hard here especially when grogue is made available to them ;-) Bring your dancing shoes. More international than local music played. Whatever.

Pó di Terra: Jamaica in Cabo Verde

Cheap rides, Ilha do Sal

Local shop

In Santa Maria are some small shops.
For food & drinks there are some small supermercados, some boutiques for bath & beachwear. Not much choice.

There are not many capeverdian handicrafts available, but you can find some jewellery and other articles of local materials.

In the marquet you can find a lot of statues and other things of the african continent, especially Senegal. Nothing very special.

In Mindelo we found a shop with very special
objects and jewellery from the african continent (I'm a collector). The owner told us to open a second shop in Santa Maria very soon (in summer 2002 we saw the shop, but it wasn't still open).

Tourist Traps

The Desert Island

Ilha do Sal is the tourist trap itself.
There are lots of hollyday programs at travel agencies. You will end up for a week or two on a deserted island with not that much to see.
If you are looking to spend days in the hotel swimmingpool, that's ok, but if you want to meet locals, visit cultural spots, it's defenetely not the place.

Unique Suggestions: Stay the shorter period of time.
I, for instance, had to stay there one night because of flying schedules.

Fun Alternatives: All the other islands in Cape Verde are worthwhile

Sal, drive to the westcoast, Ilha do Sal

sachara Says:  North of Palmeira was this little funny shelter in the middle of the desert near Buracona.Near Buracona is the Olho Azul (blue eye). You can see the sun shining for only two hours a day on the seawater deep down, through a oval hole in the basaltrock.

Sal, drive to the vulcanic westcoast

Sal, drive to the vulcanic westcoast, Ilha do Sal

sachara Says:  From Espargos leads a unpaved road to the north. This part of the island looks like a desert plain. After 6 KMs you can turn left to the west coast. The westcoast is scenic, rough and vulcanic. From there is a track to the south to Palmeira.
