Ilha do Sal

by stigel

The "island of salt" is the one place in Cape Verde that receives a significant number of tourists - because of the great climate and its beaches. The most popular town is Santa Maria on the islands sothern tip, a 20 minute drive from the international airport. There are a number of large hotels, restaurants and a beautiful beach! As with most places in the country there is not a whole lot to do but relax, have a beer and enjoy the weather.

Visit Santo Antao

by sachara

Santo Antao is one of the most beautifull islands of Cape Verde. There are mountains, fabulous views, green valleys with plantations of banana, mango and papaya and in the north cosy fishing villages.Santo Antao and Sao Nicolau are the best places for walks and hiking. The airport of Santo Antao was out of order (in 2002). So we took the one hour ferry from Mindelo to Porto Novo. The sea can be rather rough sometimes. We didn't have problems. For more information and pictures look at my Santo Antao page.

Mindelo is situated at a great bay.Mindelo with the deepest port of the archipelago is a junction of intercontinental shipping.Visit the lifely Praca Amilcar Cabril and the bars and music-cafe's in the environment of the Rua Libertadores d'Africa.Mindelo is known as a centre of culture, especially of the traditional music.Other things to do or to see:Go to the fish-market, walk around and look at the many colourfull colonial houses, visit the beach at Baia das Gatas.

Fogo

by Joan58

The archipelago of Cape Verde has a volcanic origin and Fogo is a black lava cone. Pico de Fogo is about 3000 meters high and is an active volcano. Going to visit Fogo and hiking the volcano has to be an unforgettable experience.

Santiago

by Joan58

Santiago is the most 'African' island of Cape Verde, where the African roots of the people are more felt. Here there is Praia, the capital city of Cape Verde. Santiago is the first island the Portoguese settled. They discovered it in 1460 and built the first town, Ribeira Grande, today renamed Ciudade Velha. Santiago was a base where the African slaves were gathered before the long crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. So at Santiago you can visit historical places.

Boavista

by Joan58

Boavista is called the 'Caribbean of Africa'. White beaches with coconut and date palms, a torquoise sea, bright coloured little villages and in the middle of the island the desert of Viana, a little desert with white sand dunes and green oasis. I saw a picture of this place and I would like to visit it, but the organized tour by plane was a little too expensive...

Ilha do Sal

by Joan58

First, go to visit Ilha do Sal and its little villages. Ilha do Sal is your starting point when you arrive at Cape Verde. In a day time you can visit all the island, flat and desert, and the villages of Santa Maria, Espargos and Palmeira. I tell you more about it in my Ilha do Sal page. (please, wait, my pages are under construction)

A: Mindelo is in my opinion the most attractive town in Cape Verde. Nice town by the sea with colonial buildings and a pretty decent local nightlife.
