On the islands are small busses to all towns and villages.At Santo Antao many busses wait in the port of Porto Novo. The busses will depart when there are enough paying passengers.At Santiago you take a taxi from the airport to Sucupira, the market in Praia. From there many busses depart to everwhere on the island.
The boat trip from Mindelo to Porto Novo takes one hour.There was a warning that the sea could be rather rough.Many capverdians had their plastic bags ready and the crew supplied a lot of buckets.Without problems we arrived at Porto Novo.
Every day there 2 or 3 boats to Santo Antao early in the morning.It was difficult to get the right information about getting tickets, allthough we tried to find out the day before at the port and the hotel.For the boat -we came for- it was neccesary to get the tickets in town. We didn't know.We were lucky to catch another (smaller) boat for which was the ticketoffice at the port.There was also an third boat that morning.
Most people arrive at the international near Espargos at Ilha do Sal.With small planes of TACV you can fly between most of the islands.The planes fly sometimes in time, sometimes they are a little late.From Santiago to Sal the plane once had a departure of three hours earlier.We didn't get the message, so we missed that plane.
From London Heathrow via Lisbon with TAP Air PortugalTACV fly regular inter island air services. Their scheduling can be prone to last minute changes however.There are also regular ferry services between certain islands (e.g. Sao Vicente - Santo Antao .. see photo)
the last day nobody had more cars to rent. So we went for the other option that is to rent someone with a car! On the main square of Sal Rei you'll find loads of Toyota that work as a Taxi. You can ask them to show you around, or if know were you want to go, ask them to take you there, and wait for you, if you want to go for a swim or something. Don't forget to arrange the price before you step in!
It's already reported somewhere else in this page that the return travel was really wrong arranged and we needed to pay something to get on the righ flight in the right day at the right time ... Kreutzer touristik (the tour operator we used for this travel) was immediately refunding what we spent.I think it was the case to make u all aware of this :-)
And this was the drama: tickets from Sal to FFurt were wrongly booked !!!! So we had to change this paying something more :-( ... ok ... BUT: the check-in lady was maybe mixed-up by this tickets and she checked one baggage to Lisbon only (stop-over) and one to FFurt (final destination) ... we realized this but too late :-(. After a long discussion we decided to miss the connection flight in Lisbon just to collect the wrongly checked-in baggage hoping that the one in FFurt was not being lost as well. Good decision after all cause the lost & found in Lisbon was more than crowded ... end of the story: some hours delay and 2 baggages safe at home :-)Learnig lesson: kill the check-in lady !!!!!!!
To reach our island Boavista from Sal (international airport island) we went for internal flights with TACV, the local company. Aircrafts are ATR-42 and flight is some kind of 15 minutes long.Boavista airport is just a little bit bigger than a bus stop and they deliver baggages by hands !!!!TACV is a good company, not the tropical u could expect ... but: unless other airlines u always have to confirm flights 72 hours before departures cause they often cancel or change planned schedules. This is also related to weather condition making not as easy as usual taking off & landings.
TAP Air Portugal was the flights provider for us ... they serve delicious food also in economical class but they have some aircrafts in the fleet you cannot believe ... so ollllllld and dirty and ... and... it was orrible to sit in this Lockeed Tristar, it was as bad as a lost museum !!! Nevertheless the flight was perfect ...Go to the next tip for leg ...

A: Mindelo is in my opinion the most attractive town in Cape Verde. Nice town by the sea with colonial buildings and a pretty decent local nightlife.
