N'Djamena, "entre nous le sida ne passera"

by sachara

Walking several times along the fence near the stadion with colourfully painted wallpaintings, I made pictures of a lot of them. They were so wonderful, giving an impression of African life and local art.Only at a closer look you see all these images have a message, warning against unprotected sex and HIV-infection. This image says "entre nous le sida ne passera!" (aids, it will not happen to us).

N'Djamena, ''roulez avec prudence''

by sachara

Every time I walked along the Avenue Mobutu near the stadion I had a close look at the about 20 images on a fence. They were very colourful and funny to look at.On this one you can read:Fest Africa 2003, sous les etoiles (under the stars): ''roulez avec prudence'' (drive carefully). The girl at the backseat of the motorcycle has a huge condom as rucksack.I hope they know how to use this condom in reality, because later I heard the next story of a small town in Ethiopia. Here the people were surprised to be pregnant or HIV-infected, allthough they used condoms. The story tells that they did it the way it was showed on a campaign billboard in the centre of the town. When I visited that town, I saw this billboard and the condom .... it was tied around the finger.

N'Djamena, campaign against aids

by sachara

Near the hippodrome and stadion at the Avenue Mobutu in N'Djamena I saw this fence, colourfully painted with about 20 different images.First I passed by minibus. Then I thought it was only an advertisement for Fest Africa 2003. When I walked along this fence the next time and could have a closer look at every image, I find out it was a campaign against aids. The use of these wonderful wallpaintings as artistic mean to make the young people aware of the dangers of unprotected sex.

The people

by seratonin

Generally spoken, the people in Chad are very friendly. They may be not so outgoing like in other african country, but they are helpful and hospitable. In April 2003, we recognized some bad sentiments against americans. Not really surprising at this time... As we could explain our point of view of the conflict in iraq and the middle east, the bad mood was gone. Generally, you will find at the most villages somebody speaking french. Normally, the policemen and militarist are the ones who are most probably speaking french. If you are travelling to the north of Chad, some arabic words are very helpful.

Food in Chad

In terms of culinary pleasures, Chad has not much to offer.Normally they serve bred and "la sauce", a pot with some meet and a sauce. Somethimes, pretty acceptable, but sometimes also a bit bad tasting...

Abeché was the former capital of the powerful Ouaddai kingdom. It is situated in the east of Chad, next to the border to Sudan. You can reach Abeché by public car in a 2 day trip from the chads capital N'Djamena
