Small, Poor, and Stunning

by X_Over

The people in the capital city of Moroni on the Island of Gran Comoros are incredibly friendly. The country has an undeveloped tourism structure at best, so I suppose they haven't had a chance to have tourists get on their nerves and cause headaches.I visited the country in March while deployed to a ship with the US Navy. I was one of the few people allowed to leave the ship which was anchored out as we say in the Navy. I am a photo journalist for the Navy and was documenting a community relations project that my fellow shipmates had volunteered for. The projects consisted of painting some monuments, and dropping off some first-aid and hygiene supplies to a local hospital.Moroni is tiny and not much is available. The center of town is basically two streets perpindicular to each other, forming a T. Oh, and there is the port area, which has a somewhat dodgy vibe to it. There is not much to...

Beauty Mask

by alnoor

You have to try the "beauty mask". This "beauty mask" is a traditional auction that comorian women put on their face to protect themselves from the sun and from the heat from the kitchen. But more than that, this beauty mask has tremendous other benefits: wipe out of your face all small buttons and it also smooth your skin by removing all the dead cells. And it really works !!

Clothes

by alnoor

You will need summer clothing when coming to the Comores. If you are planning a trip from November to March, think of bringing your rain coat as it is really rainy. If you are planning to climb to the Karthala, you have to bring warm clothing as temperature are freezing (0°C to 5°C).The Comores are 99% Muslim but it is a very moderate and tolerant islam. However, you have to consider not wearing swimsuits and transparent or provocative clothes when going in towns and villages.

Currency & change

by alnoor

The rate of exchange for the comorian franc is fixed. 1 euro = 492 Comorian francs. The euro is the second currency in the Comoros. Therefore, you don't need at all to change your euros.Credit cards are not accepted, except for one or two hotels. However, you can withdraw cash at the only bank of Comores, BIC (Banque Internationale des Comores), a subsidiary company of BNP-Paribas. You will thus depend on the opening hours (Monday to Thursday: 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Friday: 7:30 to 11 a.m.).

Visa

by alnoor

You must provide yourself with a valid passport and a visa which can be issued at the airport. It is better however to provide your passport to your hotel and ask them to do the necessary for issuing your visa on departure from the Comores.5 days visa: 15 euros7 days visa: 24 eurosFor Visa extension, brings with you 2 identity photographs

Socializing and eating !

by salimdine

Comorians eat mostly imported rice, usually with a fish or meat sauce. Plentiful local fish (tuna, barracuda, wahoo, and red snapper) are the main source of protein. Cassava is eaten fried, boiled, or grilled. Taro, green bananas, breadfruit, and potatoes (both white and sweet) are often served. Chicken, goat, and imported beef are popular meats. Pork is forbidden by Islam. Comorians spice their foods with putu, a hot pepper sauce. Bread is common, and fruits such as oranges, bananas, pineapples, papayas, mangoes, passion fruit, and litchi are plentiful in season. Coconut is used in some sauces. Urban markets sell tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, and green beans. Indigenous spices include cloves, cinnamon, saffron, and cardamom. Water, tea, and fruit juice are drunk with meals. Most Comorians who eat breakfast usually have cold leftovers along with hot, sweet tea. The afternoon meal includes...
