Laketo village

by jacobzoethout

This is Laketo village, between Divo and Sassandra. We had to wait here for a few hours for the next bush taxi. The local people were very interested to see the pictures in my West Africa Lonely Planet guide.

Tabou

by jacobzoethout

Tabou is a town in the far south-west of Cote d'Ivoire, located at the Atlantic coast. It is a place of fishermen. The sea here was too dangerous to swim; the beach was too steep. From Tabou, we wanted to enter Liberia but we didn't succeed. We stayed in hotel La Cotiere, another low-cost place with huts. Airco and water was not working. But the attractive terrace, the cold beers and the friendly people working there made us enjoy the evening.

Rainforests

by jacobzoethout

The interior of southern Cote d'Ivoire is characterised by rainforests. We went from Divo, an interior town, to Sassandra at the coast and came across lots of small villages, unseen by tourists. Travelling here means sitting, packed together, in a bush taxi, next to a woman with two chickens on her lap.

Sassandra

Sassandra is an attractive place to stay; it is located at the delta of the Sassandra river, next to the sea. The thing to do here is to make a trip with a pirogue, searching for hippo's. We didn't find any, just heard one. But in the mangrove trees there were monkeys swinging around and many beautiful birds. We stayed in hotel Chez Tantie Youyou; a nice place with a terrace next to the water and huts between lots of coconut trees.

Abidjan

by jacobzoethout

Abidjan is the biggest and most important city of Cote d'Ivoire, though not the official capital. We stayed in hotel Konankro, a cheap hotel in the Marcory area. On the other side of the street, there was a pleasant bar where we drank a few Ivorian beers. I just stayed half a day in this city, I met some nice and friendly people which contrasts with the bad reputation of the city.

Grand Bassam, French Colonial by the sea

by Lemieuxs

The resort town of Grand Bassam was really impressive, the French colonial building, most in an advance stage of disrepair were somewhat haunting, yet the locals were friendly and overall I felt safe, the sea was beautiful and the trip was memorable.

Cathedrale St. Paul

by canuckmike

Another gigantic church in this nation. It is a real unusual building with nice stained glass. You can take an elevator to the top of the tower but it will cost you bit. If you are in Abidjan you should check it out from at least the outside.

Stained Glass Windows

The Basilique de Notre Dame de la Paix has some 7400 sq metres of it featuring around 5000 different colours. The black guy next to Jesus is the former president and the man responsible of this church. The guy on the left second from the bottom is the architect of the church.

Basilique De Notre Dame De La Paix

I still remember arriving into Yamoussoukro and the all of a sudden there is this mammoth structure. This is what US$300,000,000 will get you. At the papal's request the cupploa is a bit lower than St. Peter's dome. Marble imported from various European nations. It will take about 2 hours to tour it. Apparantly it was given as a gift to the Vatican so you might be on Vatican soil and not Cote d'Ivoire.

An Odd Capital

by canuckmike

Yamoussoukro became the capital of Cote d'Ivoire in 1983 because one man decided this. Felix Houphouet-Boigny is the one who led Cote d'Ivoire to independence and became the country's first president. He was born around here and thus decided to make it the capital. It is strange to see a city developed for what seems like millions of people but have only around 100, 000 inhabitants. One unusual sight is to see a six lane highway with only one or two cars go down in the day.
