Abidjan, citycentre

by sachara

Abidjan is a city of contrasts with two faces. At one hand the areas where the ordinary people live, like in Treichville, with low, traditional buildings . And at the other hand Le Plateau. At Le plateau you can find skyscrapers and other high modern buildings.

Road to Abidjan, lunchstop

by sachara

North of Abidjan we had our last lunchstop at a local bar in a small town before we entered the outskirts of the big city Abidjan. At the bar was not much choice, but we could order bread with omelets, so we did. And it was a delicious meal.

Yamoussoukro, mosque

by sachara

In Yamoussoukro there was not only built that enermous baslica, but also, not far from the baslicia, a new very large mosque with imposing minarets. Allthough the mosque had a smaller size than the basilica...

Yamoussoukro, basilica under construction

by sachara

When we visited Yamoussoukro in 1989 the basilica was still under construction. We liked to visit the basilica and have a look inside, but it was not allowed to come too close or to enter the area. That was a pity !!!

Basilique of the Notre Dame de la Paix

by sachara

The most peculiar and spectacular sight in Yamoussoukro is its huge Basilica in the middle of nowhere .... Coming from the north we could see the silhouette of this enormous building allready from far. This picture is taken from the entrance of the presidential palace.

On the road, buying wood

by sachara

After our stay in Kafolo we were on the road again, heading south. This time we took the road from Ferkessédougou to Yamoussoukro. At the roadside, on our way to Katiola, we had to buy wood for our brousse-kitchen.

Kafolo, bar

by sachara

Opposite the pump in the centre of Kafolo, Marcellin has his bar.During our stay we visited his bar for eating our meals. I liked the African food here more than the food in the lodge a few KMs from the village. And we always enjoyed to chat with Marcellin and his friends at his bar.

Kafolo, bushfires

by sachara

The villagers often make bushfires. they explained to us, that they do so, for cleaning the surroundings against insects and other small animals, like snakes and scorpions. In the evening the red glow of the fires looks fascinating and terrifying at the same time...

Kafolo, stay around the pump.

by sachara

In the middle of the village Kafolo is a waterpump. We got permission again -like 2 days ago- to put our tents here for the night. We liked it to stay in the middle of the village and see there the daily life. Most villagers had to get their water from this pump.We stayed here for two nights before our truck was digged out with help of a tractor from a village 40 KM from Kafolo. In the second night at one o' clock we were waked up by the familiar sound of our truck and the singing of the villagers - from the village of te the tractor- sitting in the back.

Kafolo, village

by sachara

After a walk of 3,5 hours to the north gate of the Comoë Park we had to wait 2,5 hours. We were happy to meet at the gate a man with a moto-cycle, who could go to Kafolo to find a pick-up for us. He succeeded and after an one-hour ride with that pickup, we were joyful to see the houses and huts of Kafolo again.....
