Heal Africa is a NGO providing mostly medical/psychological help for people in the DRC. Given the conflict in Eastern Congo and the vast sexual violence against women, counselling rape victims and helping those who were abandoned by their families or cannot return to their communities for other reasons has become one of the focusses of their work. To help women (also women whose husbands were killed and who are left without means) to generate an income, they train women in a workshop to make clothes and other textile articles. Dresses and blouses made of local fabrics are sold on site
What to buy: you can buy dresses, tunics, pants, also shirts for men (if you can get men to wear the bright colors and bold patterns), bags, pillowcases

when I was in Northern Kivu, I did not really expect to shop delicacies in a war zone, but as it turns out cheese is a popular item for visitors to buy. Definitely better than most of the local cheese you can buy in Kenya, the heavy round loafs of cheese last long and are an unusual souvenir. You do not head out into the mountains around Kitshanga where the cattle farms are if the security in the region is tense (which happens regularly). Some shops in Goma sell the cheese as well, and I heard you can also buy it at the airport (took the land route when going there, so I only know this from hearsay)

Never seen that anywhere else.
You landed at Ndjili (International airport of DRC Kinshasa), you cross the border and the medical control and you are in the place awaiting for your luggages...
Since the beginning of 2007, there is a tax free shop there and it is not a joke.
Cheaper than in the flight of course.
What to pay: whisky bottle (well known) : 17 USD
200 cigarettes (the famous cow boy trade mark): 15 USD
