Train trip From Kananga to Lubumbashi
sahara_stroller profile photo

It is faster to reach Beigin from Moscow than Lumbumbashi from Kananga (or Ilebo). Kananga is preferable departure point as it is well linked by planes to Kinshasa. If you are thinking of undertaking this epic train journey, the following advise is helful:

There is no fixed days of departures (and indeed arivals...)

There is NO INFORMATION of any kind in Kinshasa

You must call the director of trains in Kananga
Mr Mato 0997115912 or the director of train departurs in Kananga 099244937 and ask them of the estimated day of departure. They will tell you to call again the day before they ecpect the train to arrive, so they can give you an aproximate estimation.
The journay will probably exeed the 5 days. The trip to Kananga from Kinshasa will also exeed the 5 days, but will be more painful.
If you want to reach the Zambian border without the adventure of a life time (and save a couple of weeks)
Congolais airline fly every morning Kinshasa - Lubumbashi for 285 Dollars

We found the most comfortable route to get to Democratic Republic from the UK was this -
Fly London to Nairobi then overnight in Nairobi for a bit of RnR.
Fly Nairobi to Kigali in Rwanda then drive across Rwanda, which is a very small country, to the border with Democratic Republic of Congo. Drive to Bukavu.
We had pre-booked drivers from Kigali airport to the border then from the DCR border our guide met us and drove us to Bukavu.

Typical Main Road

We just drove over the border in a convoy of a few cars. The further one progressed into the country the worse the roads became - but we did make it back! Photo of the main highway between Likasi and Kolwezi. This highway actually looks like what was called a 'strip' road in Zambia. In order to save money, only a single vehicle width is paved down the middle of the road. All traffic uses the paved section until they meet an on-coming vehicle (which is usually not all that often where these roads are built). The rule is that each vehicle moves to the side as they pass each other, with only one set of wheels remaining on the paved section! Hopefully the drivers know the side that they are supposed to move to!! The power lines were mainly to supply the large copper mining industry.

Les taxis communs coûtent entre 50 et 100 Francs congolais. Le système routier est médiocre. Location de voiture avec chauffeur et essence inclus possible (varie entre 20 et 100$ US par jour). Transport en commun quasi inexistant.
