Uvira is adjacent to the towering mountains of the Great Rift Valley. The mountains are part of the Mitumba Mountain range that stretches along the Western Rift Valley in Burundi and Eastern Congo west of lake Tanganyika. The two main peaks, Mount Kahuzi (3,308m) and Mount Biéga (2,790m) are extinct volcanoes.

Our visit to Uvira came on a Saturday and most of the residents of the town were mingling around in the main road, visiting cafes, doing their shopping or trying to sell their goods. A bustling city scene with thousands of colourfull people!

As in other countries around the world the river through the town is the cenral hype of activity. The river in Uvira was used on one side of the bridge as car wash, with huge trucks been driven right to the edge of the river and been washed. Whereas on the otherside women washed their laundry and kids played in the water.

As soon as one crosses the border into the DRC one gets reminded that this used to be a war zone, and that the peace is guarded by the United Nations. The main contingent of soldiers who are stationed here are from Pakistan, and the supply bases can be seen on either side of the road from the border to Uvira.

An ocean in the middle of Africa, with white sandy beaches and sun chairs? Okay you have not had too much local Rum - but you have arrived at the biggest fresh water reserve on the continent of Africa, right in the heart of Africa - Lake Tanganyika.
It is the deepest lake in Africa and holds the greatest volume of fresh water. It extends for 673 km in a general north-south direction and averages 50 km in width. The lake covers 32,900 km², with a shoreline of 1,828km and a mean depth of 570 m and a maximum depth of 1,470 m. Flying across the lake I was in the cockpit of our plane it took 45 minutes from South to North at 850 km/h!

One thing that amazed me was the friendliness that greeted us when we decided to hop across to the DRC for a few hours. The myth African border crossings are unfriendly and rude took a complete different shape when even the Station Commader decided to pose for a picture, after he ensured that we crossed the border in less then 5 minutes.
