Taking photos in sensitive areas.

by stewarth99

If you want a decent photo, buy a postcard. The professional who took it will have taken the time to get the lighting right, no doubt taking several photos to get the one that comes out. You will then contribute to the economy of the photographer, the card seller and your guide. How much you contribute to the last two depends on your bargaining skills.

ATMs

by graeme83

There are plenty of ATMs in Egypt. My card worked in most machines. The only time I had to visit a money changer was when I needed to change Egyptian money to US dollars for the Cairo to Aswan train. I tend to find that I get a better currency rate from my bank than I ever do from money changers.

Ramadan

by graeme83

Ramadan is the most important month for muslims. It celebrates the time when God revealed the Koran to Mohammed. During this month, muslims abstain from eating, drinking or smoking between sunrise and sunset. Many restaurants and cafes won't open until after sundown. Of significance to travellers is the Nuweibia to Aqaba ferry. Preceding and during Ramadan this ferry will be full of people travelling from Africa to Saudi Arabia, meaning that the ferry will be full.Upcoming dates for Ramadan are below :2009 (1430): Aug 21 - Sep 19 2010 (1431): Aug 11 - Sep 9 2011 (1432): Aug 1 - Aug 29

Student Cards

by graeme83

If you have a student card the price of pretty much all the attractions will be halved. It is possible to acquire an international student card (ISC) in some establishments in Luxor that will be valid for a year.

Arabic Numbers

by graeme83

It is very useful if travelling independently to learn the Arabic Numbers. Many buses, for example in Cairo, will only have their numbers written in arabic. It is also useful looking in shops that actually have prices written on goods for sale. A good webpage for this, and some Arabic phrases is below :http://www.arabicinsurance.com/arabic_english.htm

Taba Border

by graeme83

On leaving Israel there is a departure tax of 94.50NIS. For entering Egypt, most nationalities can receive a free Sinai permit allowing 14 days within Sinai itself. You must have an advance visa if you wish to proceed out of the Sinai. I got my visa at the Eilat Egyptian Embassy. Whether you have a full visa or not, you should be charged 63EGP entry tax 1km down the road from the border. Luckily I look like I could be Egyptian (and can say hello in Arabic) so I was not charged this tax. The other people I was travelling with were seated behind me, didn't look Egyptian and weren't so lucky ;)

When To Go, best time to see Ancient Egypt?

by jumpingnorman

I was fortunate to go to Egypt on the first week of December, when the temperature was not too hot, and not too cold - just right. My interests were to see the ancient temples around Luxor and Aswan, and these places which are south of Cairo are unbearable during summer, from June to August (SCORCHING HOT, over 40 degrees Celsius). That said, the best time to go to Egypt to see the famous temples is from December to January, during the winter months - naturally this is also the high tourist season, but understandably so. However, around Cairo, there may be overcast skies and cold nights during wintertime. Furthermore, when going to the beaches, people might prefer to go during the summer months when the desire is for bathing under the sun. Others suggest spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) as the "compromising" months for seeing Egypt in "General" or for an...

Tips for travelling in Egypt

by embodiedspirit

The temples, and of course the Pyramids & Sphinx. Also a cruise down the Nile is a must, and the Khan El Khalili market in Cairo is fabulous. Cruising the Nile, and visiting the temples. I also miss the friendliness of the people and the simple life and beautiful countryside of fertile fields and date palms in the south.I've just come back from a fabulous 2 weeks in Egypt and the tips on this site that I read beforehand were fabulous, so I thought I'd add some comments of my own. WHAT TO TAKE:Make sure you take lots of TOILET TISSUE (little packs of tissues were the best) and little bottles of NO-WATER STERILISING HANDWASH (eg. Dettol) as many places have very poor toilet facilities. Also lots of IMODIUM for diarrhoea and a stronger PRESCRIPTION ANTIBIOTIC from your doctor (eg. Noroxin) is essential - plus Codral COLD & FLU tablets. No matter how careful you are with only drinking...
