General Tip

by NilePrincess

Hi there,Will give your questions a shot. 1) You can do Egypt independently. I've done it four times. I always say it can be done but it's not for everyone. It requires a bit of research, patience, a sense of humor and an ability to just relax and go with the flow. For the adventurous, it is loads of fun and you will learn to laugh at yourself. You will also learn that there are things that are not worth the hassle just to say you did it on your own (trips to Abu Simbel come to mind. Hotel trips are insanely inexpensive). For Cairo, it helps if your transportation is pre-arranged. Just hire someone for the day or you will spend half your day haggling with taxi drivers. Some people like this. I was over it after my first visit :-). Just do it once, and keep the guy for the day. I also find that having a guide at certain places enhances your appreciation of the place more than a guide book...

Photos in the tombs

by bdougherty

Taking photos inside of any of the tombs or pyramids (also tombs) is prohibited. It is done frequently but technically illegal. Baksheesh is the best way to circumvent this obstacle. I would only recommend tempting the guard at the entrance if there are not others around (either officials or tourists). If you are in a busy area this will likely not work but in a less traveled site it often does. 5-10 EL is typically an accepted rate. If you can opperate without a flash it is best although difficult to capture a good image.I was caught by a guard inside the pyramid of Khafre and was simply told not to take any pictures as the interior is considered sacred. You don't need to purchase a permit at any place I am familiar with - just don't take pictures of anything associated with the military, police or government. And don't take a picture with someone unless you are willing to provide them...

Best tourguide in Egypt

by vdoortje

5 years ago we went on our first tailormade trip to Egypt. Mohamed Bahaa was our guide during the entire trip. We became very good friends and since then he arranged every trip we made in Egypt. He showed us the hidden Egypt. The local life of the back street alleys. Ever seen clothes being ironed while the iron is operated with the man's feet?? Going at midnight to a barbershop and see a man's beard plugged with a thread? Taste local snacks and food. Even have diner with a local family?Mohamed (and his friends) opened doors to us that were otherwise closed. He showed us Tempels that were closed to the public. His friend showed us the non tourist parts of Esna and we went up the High Dam Monument in Aswan. He is very good with children and can arrange tours for disabled people. All of that for a very competing price and the best service you can imagine. How to reach...

Using credit/debit/ATM cards in Egypt

by MikeySoft

ATMs are easy to find in Egypt and I only used ATMs to get Egyptian money while in Egypt. You should be aware that many US banks add an additional fee for foreign exchange on a credit or debit card, something like 3 to 5%. They may also have a minimum fee like $10 to $25. You can call them and ask. However, CapitalOne does not charge (the last time I checked) the additional fee for their credit cards. This is not only for China but for all foreign charges. It is also my understanding that both Visa and Mastercard (no matter who is the bank) charge a 1% fee and this fee may be hidden in the exchange rate. I don't know if this happens with CapitalOne, however, comparing the exchange rate used, and the exchange rate listed on http://www.xe.com/ around the date of the transaction, this does not seem to be the case. For ATMs, I use my credit union debit card. My credit union does not charge an...

Secretes of the Sands By Harry Thurston

by Doctor38

This is another fascinating book about a different part of Egypt. The book discusses the History of the Dakhla Oasis and the Western Desert over the last 8000 years. The book goes through evidence of past funa and flora. it also deals with the many civilizations that inhabited the site: Neolithic, pharaonic, Greek, Roman, Christian, and Arab Islamic. This book is based on the Dakhla Oasis project. The importance of this project stemmed from the fact that the oasis has a unique characterization and was isolated from the wrest of the world by the Sahara desertThis book will change your view of the Great Sahara. a very interesting read. It is fascinating to see petroglyph's of girafs and other animals that live in the sevana not in the desert. The desert 6000-8000 years ago was very green are with plenty of lakes and wild...

The Search for Nefertiti by Joann Fletcher

by Doctor38

Nefertiti was the wife of the heretic Pharo; Akhanaton. All traces of her disappeared during the reign of her husband. Few scientist Speculate that she disappeared only to emerge as the mysterious Smenkhkara who later ascended to the trown of Egypt with Akhanten and ultimately was his successor.Dr Fletcher is a very well known Egyptologist. She is an authority in Ancient hairs and wigs. In her book she is trying to figure out what happened to Nefertiti. She believed to have found here tomb and proven the case. The book lays the ground by discussing the historical fact of the 18th dynasty and the Amarna period. I particularly liked some the valuable resources and information about the Woman Pharo of Egypt. Some of these women ruled during the old kingdom, when a Pharo was not only a king but a walking, living God. This is a highly recommended book, very interesting and very...
