The Pyramid Builder by Christine El Mahdy

by Doctor38

This book is about Khufu (known by the greek as Cheops). The man who built the Great Pyramid. He was a living God worshipped by his people like all other Pharos of the old kingdom. I knew I had to buy this book as soon as I saw it. We are all fascinated by the Pyramids but we surprisingly know little about the man who built it.Did you know that there is no image survived for Khufu. There is a little statute (only few inches in hight) but that was proven to be NOT for Khufu. There are plenty of statue found for Khufu but they all had their heads smashed. There are plenty of paintings and statues for his brothers, sisters and children but non for the big guy him self. This book is great. It tells you most of what history know about the Man who built the Pyramids, his reign and the power struggle after his...

A Traveler's Guide to the Geology of Egypt

by Doctor38

Did you know that the Nile river used to follow from the North to the south millions of years ago??!!!! exactly in the opposite direction of its flow today. Did you know that the shores of the Mediterranean at times were as south as Al-Fayyom area 100 km to the south of Cairo. Did you know that Nile Delta was located near al Fayyom area also. In that area the famous "whales" where discovered in Wadi Al-hetan. Those "whale" or sea mammals where significant because they were the only sea creatures with legs and feet. These animals pen point the time period that land mammels migrated o the see and evolved later to all these wonderful whales, dolphins and seals.OK, I agree some times the book get too technical and author thrashes around his Geological jargon that I am no too familiar with but this book is written for some one with NO background in Geology and for the most part it is simple...

The Search for Omm Sety By J Cott

by Doctor38

This is a very entertaining book. It is about a true story of Dorothy Eady an English woman who claimed to be a reincarnation of an Egyptian concubine of The Pharo Sety I.Sety I was the father of Ramsis the Great. Dorothy had this strong belief of her previous life, ever since she was a 4 years old girl living in England. She migrated to Egypt and married to an Egyptian man and had a child which she named Sety. in 1956 during the Sinai war when the british troops invaded Sinai she renounced her british nationality and spend the rest of her life in Abydos which was rebuilt by non other than Sety and his son Ramsis the Great. She claimed that she used to life in the same temple 3000 years ago.Even if you are like me who don't believe her far fetched story, the book is worth reading and it is very entertaining . You have to admire that she basically acted upon her convections and followed...

Voice of the Rocks by Robert M. Schoch

by Doctor38

This is the most fascinating book in all of the books that I have read about Egypt. Let me start by saying that The author is NO dummy. He is a professor of Geology at Boston University. So he knows what he is talking about. He studied the Giza Platue during a field trip and Examined The base of the Sphinx and studied the rocks. He asserts that there are clear evidence that the Sphinx is was built prior to 6000 BC (8000 years ago). He reached to this conclusion by evidence of water erosions due to heavy torrential rain. The last time this kind of rain poured on the Giza Plato was at least 8000 years ago. He stated that his findings were presented in a meeting within the American Geological Society and were very will received. The current main stream opinion is that the Sphinx was built by Khafre the Builder of the second Pyramid around 2500 BC (4500 years...

Bring You Own Map from Home

by auroraef

What is my first impresson of Egypt, Egyptions, and Egypt government? This is my imagination of what they are thinking, "Hey, tourists, we don't care. You wanna come and see our country, do your own work. Bring your own map, because we don't sell it, and we don't care. Learn our language and find out yourself. We wanna close the museum at 2 pm when buses are still coming in, hey that's our right. But eh make sure bring lot's of money and spend it all. Oh don't forget to try our mango juice, the best in the world. And don't ever try to drive on your own, trust me. We Egyptians are the most daring drivers you ever seen"Travellers and tourists, you will love Egypt. All the complaints and the confusion will easily be forgotten the moment you see the Pyramids and their companions. You will want to come again, this time with much better preparation. Egyptians love babies and small kids so much....

Internet wi fi and Internet Cafes

by MikeySoft

.I did not bring my computer on this trip so it was harder to stay connected to family and friends. I found the internet cafes charged between 4 and 5 Egyptians pounds per hour, less then $1.00 USD. However, these computers were very slow. It took me almost 1 hour to send two emails. I think it is a combination of slow internet and these computes have a lot of versus and spy ware on them.I also notice that McDonald has free wi fi internet in Egypt. Only once did I see someone using the free wi fi. I think less people have laptops in Egypt. I have heard that McDonalds had free wi fi in other countries like China. But they had to stop it because lots of locals have laptops so too many people were using the internet and not eating Big Macs. :)

Visiting Petra - Entry visa to Jordan

by nadine2oo2

You gonna get your entry visa to Jordan on the ferry. So, you just pay for it on the ferry. As far as I know it is 15 USD for americans. Also, you will pay for Egypt departure tax which is L.E 100 per pax. If you will return to Egypt again (may be for your final departure), you should apply for another visa on the Egyptian borders in Taba or Nuweiba. Hope that helps.Nadine

THE EGYPTIAN POUND

by pangtidor

The currency of Egypt is the Egyptian Pound, symbolized by LE. 1 LE is divided into 100 Piasters. The banknotes will be in 100, 50, 20, 10, 5, and 1 Pound. Bring the 20, 10, or 5 Pounds banknotes for tipping and 1 Pounds for your toilet fee anywhere. The coins are less likely to be found, there is a new 1 Pound coin though. Mostly, the Egyptian money is filthy one; get a small purse for those notes only. See my other warning and danger tip FILTHY MONEY. Do not get confused with the Piasters notes.
