Respect Islamic religious and culture

by Elsa7

Do not enter a mosque wearing shorts, sleveless shirts, or any revealing clothing. When traveling overseas, one have to respect other people's beliefs and cultures, as we would like other people to respect our own religion and culture. Do not ask for drinks with alcohol anywhere at least someone offers.

FOOD AND DRINK

by draguza

In Egypt, dining out can range from stand-up sandwich bars to luxurious five-course meals. You can find small, inexpensive establishments that serve good Egyptian food for only a few pounds. If you're in a hurry, try the local snack bars. While the cubbyholes off the street (which probably have running water) are generally safe. The larger cities even have Western-style fast-food chains like McDonald's and Kentucky Fried Chicken, but they're relatively expensive. In cities both food and water are safe although the change in your diet may produce short-term gastrointestinal upsets

Visiting an Egyptian home

by schat

You will be surprised at how common it is for people to invite you to their homes for tea. It's a great way to get a feel for Egypt beyond the historical sites, and you may make some lasting friendships. A few things to expect/keep in mind: They will not ask you to remove your shoes, but if you can do it easily, it is more courteous to remove them at the door. Egyptians love sweets, so if you have a chance to pick some up, they make a popular gift item when visiting. Do not expect to meet all of the family members- it depends on your gender, how conservative or traditional your hosts are, etc. Unmarried or older women are more likely to come meet you. Shake hands only if they offer you a hand first. The tea is usually very sweet, and is preceeded by a glass of water. Drink as much as you want, and feel free to leave the rest of the water. Drink the tea down to the big glob of tea leaves...

Weddings

by schat

It's hard not to see and hear wedding celebrations- they are noisy affairs, with loud music, bright lights, and big crowds. Don't be shy about stepping in for a bit if you're invited- it's quite common for visitors to be included in the fun. Take photos, dance (only with people of the same gender) smile, and enjoy. Often, these celebrations are out in the street in front of the bride or groom's home, and are a wonderful way to make a connection with local people, who are delighted that you would join them.

Sitting for men and women

by Sambawalk

It is usual to segregate the sitting area for men and women in the public trnasportation in the muslim world. I do hope that the visitors should "respect" the local culture and be sensitive when they are travelling with local people.

The singing boat boy

by mad4travel

A true entrepreneur..This little kid came paddling up to us in a makeshift canoe when we were on a boat trip round the islands in Aswan. He grabbed hold of our boat and was dragged along and started serenading us with french songs. After much repeating of the songs as various members of the group gave him money he cast off and paddled off in search of another boat. He had earned at least £20 egyptian from our boat so who knows how much he was making in a day. Good for him!

Pigeon and dove cotes

by uglyscot

The Egyptians make very interesting structures to keep their pigeons. The style varies from place to place. Some are placed on the roofs of houses, others stand independently. One other vter remarked that they look like beehives, and that can be true.

Try a Shisha

by Myndo

The Shisha or water pipe is something you should definitely try when visiting Egypt! If you have to buy them is another thing, because I guess there are a lot of them just staying around in the corners of the houses and flats around the world, unused and almost forgotten. It is just not the same when smoking a shisha if not in Egypt.Just go into one of the many coffee houses where you see people smoking the shisha and ask for one as well. They will prepare it for you. Few things are so nice as sitting around, drinking some tea, chatting with fellow travellers and locals ... and maybe have the star sky above you.The water pipe is mostly prepared with flavored tabacco, like apple, vanille, orange. This and that it does not scratch in your throat makes it very agreeable. You can try it, even if you don't smoke. I did, too. That said, I have to add that the water that the smoke is filtered...

Physical Contact

by JohnniOmani

After living in a Muslim country for the past 2.5 yrs I have to say I was shocked by Egyptian men and their fondness of getting close to foreigners. I know there are a lot of christians in Egypt but the majority are Muslims. Despite what they may say or do (getting close to you) it is frowned upon in their culture and they would never do or touch a local woman and they know that. So if a man gets too close to you and you feel uncomfortable dont hestiate to be direct with him. In fact, if he is willing to be that forward and try and touch you or get close then he wont mind being told to back off. If nothing else works, say Imshee which means "Get away" in Arabic.

Dress code

by ifam

Please cover yourself decently whenever you are in streets, jeans and t shirt is fine but dont reveal too much especially when you wana visit the mosque and citadel, i find it totally impossible to accept when someone jus wear tight shorts and sleeveless walking in the mosque or citadel area, respect people and people will respect you too... anyway the management will ask you to wear some clothes to cover appropriately in the mosque but still some wear not appropriately...
