Unfinished Obelisk
You can visit the unfinished obelisk in the quarry at Aswan. It isn't far from the centre of town and easily do-able in an hour.

Obelisk was carved out of the solid granite rock by the ancient Egyptians and would have been taken down to the Nile for transport to Thebes etc. The obelisk is huge and you will marvel at how it was carved with the tools that were available at the time.

The obelisk was not cut out completely, as a crack was found in the granite - it is amazing.

There are quite a few steps up to the obelisk, which less able people may find difficult to manage. I went with a group of pensioners and they were fine.

Engineering Marvel of the Aswan High Dam
You need a hired car or taxi to go to Aswan High Dam since it's not close to Aswan center. The dam is the second dam built in the area to provide hydroelectric power. Unlike the Hoover Dam in the USA, there's no tour inside the dam itself. Instead, outside on roofed boards they have rendering/diagrams with simple but effective explainations of the engineering principles used and of the various parts of the dam. So, the only part of the dam you'll see is the top surface part. The "observation" area is separated from the "road" with a well-done gardening. And, upon looking beyond the dogs that pose on top of the concrete barrier you'll see the lower water elevation of the north side compared to the south side of the dam. Also, you'll get a glimpse of a rescued temple on the south end of the dam. (If you want to see glimpses of the other dam, the Aswan Dam, you either need to hire a car to cross it or get a tour to Abu Simbel which also crosses the dam. As far as I know, no one is allowed to stop anywhere near the Aswan Dam.) There's no admission fee to go to Aswan High Dam and photography is permitted.

  • Directions: close to the sudanese border. travel is only allowed in a police- escorted convoy so you and 2,000 other people get there at the same time. if you stay in abu simbel, make sure you still go early as it hit 35 degrees celcius by 7.30AM!!!!

go and visit philae temple. our trip to abu simbel included this and we were glad we went. we basically had the place to ourselves and, surrounded by water on a beautiful day, made it seem even more special.
