    Another way to get to/from Aswan is by plane. EgyptAir fly from Aswan to Cairo, Luxor and Abu Simbel (to name a few places). When we went on a half-day trip to Abu Simbel we flew from Aswan, which took about 45 minutes. However, expect delays when you travel in Egypt - our flight left one hour late. At least we could do some shopping in the departure lounge while we waited!!

    After our stay in Aswan, we sailed off into the sunset on a boat, for a 3 day Nile Cruise. There are plenty of these cruise boats on the river, and the majority cruise from Aswan to Luxor, or vice versa. Our boat was called the "Nile Bride", and slept about 150 people. There was a restaurant, bar and a roof top with a pool and plenty of chairs to sit in the sun, relax and watch the banks for the Nile pass by. The staff were incredibly friendly and the whole experience was great - highly recommended!

    We travelled to Aswan by over-night train from Cairo, a trip that took around 10 hours. It was an interesting experience. We had a small sleeper cabin, which is set up with 2 seats during the day. There was a small sink and a small amount of room for your luggage. There was a toilet at the end of each carriage. Not long after we departed dinner was served to the cabin. After dinner, an attendant came round and set up the twin bunk beds for the night. Although there was a bar on the train, we resisted and tried to get an early night....but not much sleep was had .....it was a very bumpy ride!! Next morning the attendant was back bright and early to fold up the beds and bring in the breakfast tray. We sat and looked out the window amazed at the view of the Nile, and got a glimpse of everyday life along the rail line. It wasn't the most restful of nights, but it was a new experience, and I grew quite fond of that little cabin - not much housework required!!

    We left Aswan to reach Cairo by night train. The railway station is in the city center on Sharia as-Souq. The architecture of the building is usual. 11 trains a day depart to Cairo. Time in a way is 12 hours. 12 trains a day depart to Luxor. Time in a way is 3,5 hours. The appearance of carriages isn't attractive. It seemed to me that these carriages were used since times of English colonial sovereignty! However there was clean enough and decently inside of the carriage. I have paid a place in a sleeper (in addition $60 including supper). Therefore I had a good rest at night unlike other tourists, who preferred to save money and used the sedentary carriage.     We reached Aswan after two-days cruise over the Nile from Luxor. The boats have five tourist stars. I do not have wide experience of river and sea cruises. However it seemed to me, that the boats on the Nile are comfortable and convenient enough. This is the best option for you to see all possible sights on one route in Luxor, Edfu, Kom-Ombo and Aswan. Accommodation aboard the cruise boat is on full board basis. In other words all meals included buffet style. Your cabin will be fitted with air-condition and a TV set. Every day there is an entertainment program; these up of such program vary from one boat the other. In each major cruise stop you will be given a boarding pass to be able to identify your ship upon your return. So you won’t mix your boat!     My travel companion and I went straight from the ferry to the bus station in Hurghada to buy tickets for the night bus to Aswan. We were told we could buy the tickets on board when the bus arrived. But it was a Thursday night and the bus was already full when it arrived at the bus station. A lot of people tried to get on and my friend kindly asked the bus driver to let us on board. He said yes and I quickly got the bags in the luggage compartment before anyone changed their mind. We were not the only passengers who were without seats and we had a journey of nine hours ahead of us. In the back there were mostly women sitting so we sat on the floor there. Later, when the light was turned off we tried to sleep on the very dirty floor. We were not the only persons trying to sleep on the floor, but I guess it was not often tourists were seen doing that. On the way we stopped two times for tea and once when the bus broke down. Not until it was a couple of hours left I got a seat. It was a very uncomfortable trip, but a very memorable one and for that I enjoyed it. The ticket was 45 pounds.

    You can fly to Abu Simbel from Aswan or you can take a public bus from the bus station. But a convenient, and not too expensive way is to take a tour and go with the convoy at 4 o’clock in the morning (at least it left so early in the morning in July when I went). I paid 55 pounds for the tour (only transport) to Abu Simbel, the High Dam, Philae and the Unfinished Obelisk. In the minibus we were two people who paid 55 pounds, two other who paid 70 pounds and a Japanese woman who paid 110 pounds for the same trip. At the tourist office they had told me the price should be 45 pounds, but when they said 55 pounds at my hotel I thought it was okay. The minibus picked up passengers at their hotel (me at 3.30 am) and then went with the convoy. It took three hours to go to Abu Simbel. We reached Abu Simbel around 7 am and got two hours to see the site before the convoy was leaving again.

    If you have time and like to visit places at the islands or the riverbanks, you can hire a felucca, the traditinal sailing boat. It's fun and relaxing. You can hire a felucca for just being on the water. Tolook from the water at the shores is even more relaxing. If you want only to visit Elephantine Island, Kitchener Island or the westbank you can take the ferry as well.

    We flew from Cairo to Aswan on an EARLY flight! Had to get up at 4:30!! The Aswan airport seemed like a pretty good place... several places to buy souvenirs... Also, make sure to have your tip money handy if you need to go to the restroom! They do have restroom attendants!! I couldn't find many websites on the airport - this is the best one I could find.

    It was really complicated to travel from Aswan to Luxor. In the morning we took a taxi (5 pounds) to the bus station. There they said the bus was not going until 3.30 pm (Lonely Planet had said there was one every hour). It was too many hours to wait and we asked for the minibuses. There were minibuses going, but they were not allowed to take foreigners and no one wanted to risk getting in trouble with the police. At the bus station they said we could take a train so we took a bus back to town (50 piasters) and went to the train station. After a long time in queue we were told they could not sell us the tickets, but we could buy them on board. To be sure we asked the man checking the tickets at the entrance to the platform and he said he would not let us pass without a ticket. That train was not for foreigners, who are only allowed to travel with three trains a day. Finally we had to go with the convoy at 2 pm. A taxi driver agreed to take us for 150 pounds, but as we waited another taxi came and an English man and his son in that taxi said we could go with them. We paid our taxi driver some money before he left. In the convoy there was our car and a tourist bus. In the front there was a police car and in the back there was another. During part of the journey we lost sight of the police car, but closer to Luxor they put the sirens on. This way of travelling does not feel safer. It is really a way of telling, “Here the tourists come”. Isn’t it much safer to travel among many locals on the minibus we were not allowed to take?
