Basically, the sheesha itself is a rolled tobacco leaf to which some flavor like apple, mint, hibiscus, ... is added. This package of flavor is placed in a water pipe under a burning charcoal made from the wood of a citrus tree. When inhaled, the smoke passes through a container of water inside the pipe (which makes a quiet, relaxing bubbling sound) to cool the smoke. The cool, flavored smoke is generally puffed or inhaled deeply to obtain the maximum effect of flavor.
Sheesha is generally sold in a sheesha parlor, much like an Egyptian coffee shop. Most of these shops serve (mint) tea, (Turkish) coffee and hot or cold karkade.
For obvious hygienic reasons waterpipes come with new, removable, plastic mouthpieces.
