Designer.....what???
  • Tip Rating:
  • Few women can resist the lure of a beautiful handbag on holiday, and in recent years there is a huge demand for great designer fakes.

Just down from the Savoy Hotel in Sharm is a little shop selling bags, purses, suitcases, and umbrellas. They're all designer fakes - mostly Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Burberry.

Most of the fakes are obvious fakes but a couple are pretty well made. Even most of those have tell-tale "Made in Egypt" tags:-)

I had a very amusing chat with the owner of this little shop. I was carrying a real LV that I paid Euro600 for and he was trying to persuade me to buy a fake from him for Euro40. he just couldn't see the difference between a real one and a fake, even when I pointed out the differences to him. In fairness I don't think he had any concept of what a designer label was, and just knew that everyone was anxious to buy these bags. initially I was afraid I had insulted him, but then realised that he was delighted with the chat and was already scheming how he might make his look more like mine.

I even bought one for fun and it made his day. Pic will be posted.....

    Papyrus Anyone?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Papyrus from the Egyptian Papyrus Museum - Sharm El Sheikh
    Papyrus from the Egyptian
    Papyrus Museum

As you will soon gather when you visit any part of Egypt, papyrus shops are part of the scenery and you will also find that you are dragged into any shop that you cast even a casual glance at.

Initially I have no doubt but that you (like me) will be fascinated by what's on offer and tempted to buy all around you.

My first visit to Egypt was spent eight nights in Sharm and two in Cairo. I was indeed entranced by the papyrus and, wanting to bring home a part of authentic Egyptian culture, I bought lots of them in my hotel and again at a shop in the Old Sharm market. They were pretty, but to be honest it was a mistake. When I eventually went to Cairo and visited the genuine papyrus museum I noted that the quality of the papyrus and the paintings on them was far and away superior to the Sharm ones.

I'm posting a pic of my favourite Cairo papyrus purchase. This is supposedly by a famous Egyptian artist, but I can't even read his name on the painting:-)

If you're going to Cairo, wait till you get there to buy "decent" papyrus, otherwise just buy some small souvenirs in the local supermarket in Sharm.

Duty Free Shop (Naama Bay): Don't forget your passport!
  • Tip Rating:
  • The duty free shop is located in Naama bay, behind Pacha at the very bottom on a corner. You can't miss it, it's usually very busy.

Word of advise, don't go without your passport or you won't be able to buy anything from here, but you can look.

It sells a range of things from alcohol, perfume, make up, shoes etc

I wouldn't exactly say its very cheap, but cheaper than retail shop price in the UK.

They are fixed prices - sorry no bartering here!

    Makani bakery: Bakery
  • Tip Rating:
  • A real good bakery and take away, but you can eat in if you prefer.

Bread of all sort plus sandwich fillers and soups.Puddings. The filled subs are particularly good ranging from about LE12(£1.20) for cheese and onion up to about LE18(£1.80) for really tender roast beef or about the same for a "build you own".There is plenty of other choices.

    Nice and cheap.

    Alluring Herbs....
  • Tip Rating:
  • Almost all of the large hotels have a little arcade of shops - almost as staple in this arcade you will have a jeweler, a souvenir shop, a papyrus shop, perfumery, and finally the "real herbs" shop.

I managed to ignore the hesbs and spices shops during my first trip to Egypt, and was doing great the second time around...until it came to our last day. It was unusually cold and cloudy, so to kill time we wandered the shops in the arcade of our hotel.

The last stop was the herbs shop. They are delightful to visit and the shop owner will proudly show you his natural Viagra along with natural sleeping pills, natural remedy for psoriasis, natural remedy for....indeed, they have a solution for everything. "You have tired eyes madam - yes, I have something for this. Come to this side of my shop - and would you like to buy one of my lovely hand made Egyptian carpets?" " The tired eyes are from too much alcohol, just give me something for a hangover and I might take a nap on that rug...or is it a flying carpet?" It would be if you wanted it to be (flying, that is) as they have something for everyone and a lot you don't want or need but end up buying.

I am inclined to doubt that any of these remedies really work and in fairness that's just because the dried sea rose that Mum brought home looks nothing at all like the one in the shop and stinks to high heaven.

It's great fun though, and nice to bring home something a little exotic and mystical.

herbs, spices, natural remedies of all kinds, and incense.

Bargain - the say they sell by weight but see what you can do with the prices.

    Habada: Beer Shop
  • Tip Rating:
  • Make sure to stock up on your alcohol beverages here, much cheaper than the hotels.

Most hotels charge approx 2.50 GBP for a pint of beer i.e. Stella, here it's approx 75p for a large can. Bottles of flavoured vodka bassed drinks like Barcardi are pretty good and only approx 85p a bottle.

Water is cheap - for a littre approx 20p

Also sell a variety of crisps and snacks.

When staying at the Creative Grand Sharm and Mexican we took some bottles/cans back to our room so we could have a drink before we went out on an evening.

    Drinkies: Another alcohol shop
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is an off licence or beer and wine shop if you are not from the uk and the thing that is special about this one is that they deliver, mainly for free. They may only deliver in the Hadaba,Om el sid,old town side of Sharm though I do not know this for sure. There is now a Drinkies in Naama bay,at the end of the main pedestrian street,at the side/rear of the Movenpick hotel (opposite end to the Naama centre).

The local Stella Export at 5.5LE (55p) for 500ml(5.2%abv) and Meister Max 6LE(60p) for 330ml(8%, yes, thats right 8%abv) are two of the highlights, but whilst out there in Aug 06 we came across a new champion by ABV beer, the Sakara King,10%,blimey. They now stock a bigger range of alco pops, all locally made,10% I.D. edge being the pick. They also do wine but we did not see any spirits, but local spirits are available in some of the supermarkets.
