An Abundence Of Bargains: Shop Until You Drop
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is impossible to list all the shops where bargains are the order of the day.

From delicate carving in wood or bone to sarongs, herbs and spices. Every price is negotiable so haggle, haggle and haggle!

Cotton of the finest quality is a 'steal' in Egypt so keep your eyes peeled for clothing in this material. Childrens clothing is a particularly good buy too.

Digital camera accesories are cheap, so dont worry about running short of a flash card!

Prices vary according to your bargaining skills. Begin trading at a third of the asking price and come to an amicable agreement with the vendor so you BOTH feel youve had a good deal.

Take home a piece of Egypt
  • Tip Rating:
  • Throughout old Sharm and the Naama Bay area, you will find scores of shops selling all kinds of souvenirs.
These include hand woven carpets, paintings of the pyramids on parchment, tobacco pipes and other little items unique to this part of the world.

Anything that you wouldnt get back home!!

A good way to get a good price is to offer to pay half of whatever the marked price is. Everyone bargains here so dont feel embarassed to do it.
I managed to haggle down the price of a shisha (tobacco pipe) down to 22LE (£2) from 50LE. A similar item would have cost me maybe ten times as much in London!!!
Bear in mind though, that the shopkeepers are seasoned hagglers and have turned bargaining into a fine art form!!! But as long as you stand your ground you should get a great price. Once you have completed the trade, they may even offer you a congratulatory drink like the shopkeeper in the picture!!!

    All shops in Sharm: Nightmare
  • Tip Rating:
  • You will find that shopping can be very difficult! In my opinon, avoid molls, they are 50-100% more expensive then other shops along the street. And not to mention how rude can be guys who work in molls when you do not want to buy anything in their shop.
In shop along the walking zone, you will find that seller somethimes even so not react if you say "good day" and "good bye" without buying anything.
And when seller say : "My friend I already gave you lowest price", smile and go below that price!
Be careful when buying in hmmmm supermarkets. Forget about tidy shop with prices. Make sure that you ask for price for every single thing that you want to buy before going to cash desk to avoid unpleasent surprises. When you get to the cash desk, they murmur something in Egyptian, guy types something, and when you here the final sum,,,,, So, ask for every price!

The fun of getting a bargain in Egypt!

I must say that when i first went into a shop in Egypt, i was really intimidated by the hassel you get. I felt uncomfortable in saying 'No thank you' as they made you feel bad for doing so!

However, once i did want to buy some things - the hunt for looking for it become really fun!! Some of the things you can find that are handmade are really beautiful...but expensive because of the work that has been put in it. I would ask a price once i found something...and say 'No, too expensive' and then they'd ask what i'd like to pay for it. I'd walk away like i wasn't interested then they'd ask again, really wanting your custom. So then i'd come back and offer a much lower price, then barter from there....both of you will meet a price that seems reasonable and you will end up leaving with something at a much lower price than you were told in the first place! Great! You can do this in most shops in Egypt, except the onces that have fixed prices.

I must say that i got a lot of things that were really cheap - i was a very happy customer indeed! Only thing, it gets quite addictive, once you get a bargain, you really want to find another!

If you go through the day, you tend to get more bargains as a lot of places are closed during the day because of the heat - they don't get many customers! On a evening everything is open, with plenty of people in Naama Bay - so they may feel they don't have to give it at a low price because they will have many more customers to come.

It's a part of the Egyptian charm, haggling - it's fun once you know how!

Of course you have to buy something that will remind you of your stay - they are many beautiful handmade items for your home or jewellery for yourself or a loved one!

Never accept the price they say at first, barter until your hearts content! Go and have fun!

    Naama Bay: Naama Bay Shopping
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are lots of shops in Naama Bay, however, there are lots of duplicate shops, i.e. Water Pipe Shop, Handbag shop, T Shirt Shop and Papyrus Shop.

We met a couple who said they were locked in a shop and were not allowed to leave until they puchased something. We did not experience that but it was quite busy when we went there. I would recommend you go at night as it is would be too hot to walk around in the day. Plus shops open past midnight.

The shop workers can be persistent but did not bother us at all. Just be polite and walk on by if you are not interested.

We were told that you should pay around half of the price they first offer. We found items to be so cheap anyway. Children's T-Shirts were aprox. £1 so I would have felt a little silly haggling. But I guess it can be good fun.

    Papyrus.
    Egyptian cotton.
    Water Pipes.

Depends how good you are at haggling.

Not 'Where to Shop' but 'What to Shop for'!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Amr Diab CD's
I wrote this tip out and had to erase it and start again because it sounded too......
    ......
    .... gushy.

I'm not a fan of pop music generally, but this Egyptian singer has hit the perfect note in blending Arabic & Latino music to produce some seriously good sounds. It's lively, emotive and soothing all at once. It feels like dancing or driving music, but me, I just like to listen to it in the bath! Think Ricky Martin with Soul.

I bought Amr Diab's 'Lealy Nahary' album and I adore it...

    Snorkel, mask & fins
  • Tip Rating:
  • Would recommend buying a snorkel, mask & fins (or swimming shoes). You can actually hire snorkelling equipment, but if you're going to do it every day as we did it's worth buying it out there. The local shopkeepers sell cheap equipment but if you want the decent stuff it's probably worth going into a proper diving shop.

Depends on the quality! Expect to pay from LE40 upwards for mask & snorkel and again for fins.
