Excursions, Sharm El Sheikh
You'll take a trip on quadracycles in the desert. You can take a day-trip in the afternoon or a night trip in the early hours of the morning.
I took the night trip, - one-hour riding the motocycle, then tea at the bedouins' place, then some more riding and then a stop for watching the sunrise, then riding back.
In my case we were not too lucky: it was cloudy in the morning and we did not enjoy the sunrise. But on the whole the trip was fun.
I guess it's much more enjoyable for kids of 8-14 years old.
The desert is dusty, and you will need long pants, a shirt with long sleeves and the best thing to cover your head with is ghoutra, kind of a large square kerchief; your guide wil help you tie the ghoutra on your head. It's very convenient for driving in the desert and looks exotic :-)
It will also be wise to take a bottle of water with you, and if you take an afternoon trip, don't forget sunglasses.
The trip costs about 20-25 US dollars.
You cannot go to Egypt and not visit Cairo. It's a big and busy, unique and wondeful city.
The museum and the pyramids are a must but once those have been taken care of Cairo deserves a really good explore.... much more than can be done on a short trip from Sharm.
We weren't sure what the climate (politically) was like and as we were travelling with our young children we decided to go with a tour from Sharm. We came home independently and the journey and bus (superjet) was far superior to that with the tour although there were many more check points and security checks so it did take longer.
Highly recommend a goof tour guide to show you Cairo and to avoid tourist traps. We had two days. One with a rubbish guide and one with Abdel who was wonderful. Will try to find his details and post them on.
Tourist coach took 6 hours to get to Cairo but the best part of 2 hours driving from hotel to hotel in Sharm collecting passengers it was painful!
Superjet bus back took 8 hours as had more security checks but was more comfortable, had a man with a snack trolley who worked his socks off and a tv which played Egyptian carry on films - corkers and highly entertaining. Our kids screamed with laughter throughout!
However you do it it's going to be tiring & you are going to meet lots of people (especially around the pyramids) who are keen to relieve you of some Egyptian Pounds...but well worth it!
The Citadel is just so pretty!
Men and women are not permitted to pray together in case they get a bit distracted by the opposite sex
Inside the Citadel there is the tomb of the Muslim Mohammed Ali who inspired the Mosque.
If you want to do an organised day trip to cairo check out www.onetour-egypt.co.uk. Their cairo by plane trip is 145gbp per person and includes the egyptian museum, pyramids and sphinx, lunch and khan el khalili bazaar.

to charm of sharm team: we will not forget you and we will return soon Thanks.
We booked a trip on a 'submarine' from Sharm el Sheikh. It was £20 (sterling) a head and was a great disappointment. The 'submarine' was actually a glass hulled boat. We were taken out to the middle of the bay and then had to climb down some very steep steps to the hull. It was extremely cramped and very difficult to move about. There were 20 - 30 people in all. We had to sit on tiny stools. The glass was very thick and had a milky tint to it, so the view wasn't that good either.
Having said the above, it was a good chance for us non-swimmers and divers to see the coral reefs and fish. Would I recommend it? Probably not.
Impossible to think of going to Egypt and not doing the trip to Cairo to see the pyramids.
We did a day trip (by air) from Sharm, 45 minute flight.
You can't really grasp the size of them until you stand next to one.
Spot me at the bottom in the pic!
Next to the Hyatt hotel is a riding stables.
Choose the time of day wisely for riding. The sun is too hot in the early afternoon.
Wear long trousers, good boots/shoes and use plenty of sunscreen of course....
There are a huge number of companies offering a huge number of excursions from Sharm.
Destinations include - Luxor, Mount Sinai, Ras Muhammed, Pyramids, Desert Safaris....
We chose to take a day trip by plane to Cairo to see the Cairo Museum and the Pyramids. Details can be found in my Cairo page
Clear air, just a short strip of hotels, and when you go to the desert, there is no light anymore. A pefect pace to watch the stars. And if you live in a urban area you will experience the stars in a way you never did before.
Go to the desert, but dont go on your own as it is too dangerous. You may not find your way back.
Make use of organized trips. They take you in a 4WD vehicle and drive through dunes, dry rivers etc. And unforgettable experience.
It was a great day! St. Katherine, Coloured Canyon, Blue Hole, were the highlights of a day trip that included the usual performance of a jeep bogging in the desert, with tourists pushing it under a shower of sand.
We were 9 which means that we filled the jeep, allowing to negotiate a specific program (Blue Hole was not included).
We all had so much fun (including the guide and driver), that the trip ended two hours later than scheduled, with the Russian in the other two cars desperate to "reorganize their bones".
My partner and I with our children went to Sharm from Sep 16 until Sep 30 2010
After looking at different tour companies decided to go with Sharm Life, we are so pleased to book with Sharmlife.com. We booked 4 trips, with them day trip to Cairo by air, Quad Bike Safari Trip, Aqua Park trip and Star Gazing and Bedouin show and dinner trip.
The trip to Cairo :
was an early start at 5am, went to the airport and straight on the plane and met in Cairo by Our tour guide Maya the great woman lol, there was 8 of us in our group and we went to a local cafe where we had coffee and tea with the locals then to the museum where Maya took us on a trip through ancient Egypt she was great her knowledge is extensive and her English was excellent, then a boat trip and lunch on the river then off to the Pyramids which were just amazing, off to papyrus museum then back to the airport, our driver was amazing he kept us safe all day Cairo traffic is an experience not to be missed, we arrived back at our resort at 9.30pm tired but with big smiles on our faces and memories that will last a life time.
We went at 2 o’clock which is a good time I think any later and it gets to dark and cool, Manilla and me booked single quads other couples had double bikes come on girls get a single it's great fun neither of us have ridden quads and found it easy, we had a wonderful time and will go again when we go back.
Camel Ride, Bedouin dinner and Star Gazing,:
Taken out into the desert, we had a good time riding camels, the camels took us directly to the tent, we spent a good time discovering the Bedouin Life and tasted their tea with Habak and bread, then we had dinner and a show under the stars smoked a shisha pipe, then our guide took us to see Stars and sky. Really this day was fantastic.
Also we had a nice and fun time in Aqua Park, and we enjoyed this day.
Just to wrap up don't be worried about booking with this company as they are very professional and help you in any way they can and as in another review they are cheaper than the resorts reps, so just do it and relax after all it is a holiday
regards Michael & Karoline
